Mixed response to Obama's '1967 lines' Israel speech

President Barack Obama's call for a Palestinian state along 1967 lines has been met with mixed reaction from politicians and Jewish groups.

In a speech on the direction of US policy in the Middle East on Thursday, President Obama said a Palestinian state should be based on those lines with "mutually agreed swaps".

President Barack Obama has begun his eagerly anticipated speech on the Middle East

The president, who will meet Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu tomorrow in the White House, heralded "a new chapter in American diplomacy".

In his opening remarks, he referred to the blow America had dealt to al-Qaida with the death of Osama bin Laden, and US progress in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Severed pig foot sent to Islam debate congressman

A high-profile Republican politician has been sent a bloodied pig foot with an allegedly antisemitic note attached.

The package was sent to the Capitol Hill office of New York representative Peter King, a polarising figure in the US for his role chairing last month’s congressional hearings on radical Islam. It was discovered on Monday by security before it reached the congressman.

McCain calls on rival Obama to free Jonathan Pollard

According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Senator McCain offered his support for the cause during a telephone conversation yesterday.

Republican Eric Cantor poised for majority leader role

A Republican politician from Virginia will become the most senior Jewish politician in US history later today.

Eric Cantor will be officially sworn in as the House majority leader when the Republican Party takes control of the House of Representatives, following its success at the mid-term elections in November.

The Republicans have already vowed to challenge much of President Obama’s agenda, including a push for a repeal of his healthcare reform with a vote on January 12.

Rally to mark 1,600 days since Gilad Shalit kidnap

A rally is to be held in Washington DC today marking 1,600 days since Gilad Shalit was kidnapped by Hamas.

Organisers are hoping to attract at least the same number of people to the humanitarian rally for the soldier, who has been in captivity since June 25 2006.

His parents, Noam and Aviva Shalit, have been camped outside of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem since June, in an attempt to pressure the government into striking a deal for their son’s release.

JFK speechwriter Sorenson dies

Theodore Sorensen, John F Kennedy’s speechwriter, has died at the age of 82.

Mr Sorenson, whose mother Annis Chaikin was of Russian Jewish descent, died in New York following a stroke.
He joined the future president’s senatorial staff in 1953, when he was 25 and just out of law school.

He worked with President Kennedy during the 1960 presidential election and was one of the main figures in what came to be known as Camelot.

Washington is one of the most exciting cities I've ever been in - and I took a gap year in south-east Asia.

Capitol Hill is at the end of my road and my house is right by the Lincoln Memorial and the National Mall. It's like living down the road from Parliament and in walking distance from St Paul's Cathedral.

Helen Thomas: 'you can't criticise Israel'

Helen Thomas, the White House reporter who resigned after calling for all Jews to "get the hell out of Palestine" has dismissed claims that she is antisemitic as “baloney”.

However the 90-year-old veteran Washington correspondent said that even after apologising for the comments she “had the same feelings about Israel's aggression and brutality.”
