Be careful who our friends are

I'm at a demonstration outside the Israeli embassy. People are waving Israeli flags around me, chanting in support of Israel's right to defend its citizens. A Californian rabbi is speaking about the Jewish state. As a proud Zionist, I should be in my comfort zone. But I've rarely felt more uncomfortable in my life.

Respect is due to a college Jew

Any chance of my becoming a famous TV celebrity historian was dashed at 14 when, in order to pursue my foolish, romantic, childhood dream of becoming a dentist, I switched to biology, chemistry and physics. So, when I went on a day-trip to Oxford last week and discovered that the world's oldest university was established by a Jewish guy, I had a "watch out, Simon Schama" moment.

O'Keefe and Atzmon 'persona non grata'

University Palestine Societies have condemned former US marine Ken O'Keefe following the controversy over his comments comparing Jews to Nazis.

Six groups – at campuses in Glasgow, Leeds, Dundee, Edinburgh and Liverpool – declared that Mr O'Keefe was "not welcome to speak" at their universities.

Jewish students cancel 'controversial' lawyer's invite

Baroness Deech warns of campus racism

Sally Hunt re-elected as UCU general secretary

Sally Hunt has been re-elected general secretary of the University and College Union after defeating Socialist Workers' Party member Mark Campbell.

Ms Hunt received 10,776 votes, a winning margin of almost 7,000 and representing 73 per cent of the votes cast.

The winning margin was five times larger than when she was first elected in 2007.

Countering hate crime

Four-in-five hate crimes resulting in court action in 2010-11 were racist attacks, Muslim and Jewish students at the University of London Union have been told.

They attended a meeting on hate crime and institutional discrimination organised by the Coexistence Trust, which tackles Islamophobia and antisemitism.

'Honour' tie to Hamas

The controversial Palestinian academic, Azzam Tamimi, this week reiterated his commitment to Hamas in an address at London University's Queen Mary College.

Speaking at an event entitled One State or Two State Solution, under the auspices of QMC's Palestine Solidarity Society, Dr Tamimi told Israel's Ha'aretz newspaper that he had legitimate political views which opponents wished to silence.
