Darren Aronofsky tipped for George Clooney sci-fi film

Acclaimed Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky could be teaming up with George Clooney for his next film.

Mr Aronofsky, 42, pulled out of directing X Men spin-off The Wolverine earlier this year because he was reluctant to be separated from his family during the lengthy shoot.


Clueless star Alicia Silverstone names son after animal

Clueless star Alicia Silverstone has given birth to her first child - a boy she has called Bear Blu.

The Jewish actress, who was once named the world's "Sexiest Female Vegetarian" by animal rights organisation Peta, revealed the news on her personal blog.

Ms Silverstone, 34, said she and her husband, musician Christopher Jarecki were "all three in love".

Tom Cruise's Holocaust awareness mission

Hollywood star Tom Cruise has been honoured by a Jewish human rights organisation for his work raising awareness of the Holocaust.

Mr Cruise, 48, was given the Humanitarian Award for his philanthropy work by the Simon Wiesenthal Centre at its annual dinner last night.


'The Way We Were' writer dies at 93

The writer of the classics West Side Story and The Way We Were has died at the age of 93.

Arthur Laurents, born Arthur Levine to atheist Jewish parents in Brooklyn, died on Thursday in New York.

He began writing military training films for the US army during the Second World War, then went on to enjoy an illustrious career in both theatre and film.


University blocks honour over Tony Kushner's Israel stance

Tony Kushner will not be honoured with an honorary degree after a New York university cancelled plans because of the award-winning Jewish playwright's stance on Israel.

After one of the City University of New York (CUNY) board members objected to the institution celebrating Mr Kushner's career at its commencement ceremony later this year, the rest of the board voted against the plans.


Lanvin's Elbaz plans fashion line for kids

Israeli fashion designer Alber Elbaz is entering the world of couture for children.

Mr Elbaz, artistic director of the Lanvin fashion house, will unveil a new collection for pre-teen girls in the summer.

It will include 25 pieces for those aged between four and 10 and will be sold from November in 80 Lanvin stores around the world.

Mazel Tov: Matisyahu tweets birth of new son

Chasidic Jewish rapper Matisyahu has announced the birth of his third child.

The musician, famous for hits including Jerusalem and King Without a Crown, revealed the news on Twitter.

He wrote: "Tonight on the birthday of the rebbe, I was blessed with a baby boy."

He was referring to the spiritual leader of the Chasidic movement.
