Lars Von Trier tells Cannes he understands Hitler

Danish filmmaker Lars Von Trier has told a Cannes press conference that he sympathises with Hitler and that Israel was "a pain".

Mr Von Trier, whose film Melancholia premieres there today, made the bizarre comments in response to a question about his family background.

Broadway show for Woody Allen and Coen brother

Woody Allen has revealed plans to write a new Broadway show.

He told the New York Times that he was working on a one-act play, to be staged on Broadway from September alongside another by filmmaker Ethan Coen.

The comedies will be shown with a third act written by Primary Colours screenwriter Elaine May.

The show will be directed by Hollywood actor John Turturro.

Coen Brothers: Israel boycott not a solution

The Coen Brothers have criticised the reasoning of artists who boycott the state of Israel.

The Academy-Award winning filmmakers, whose successes have included the recent western True Grit and the reworking of the biblical Job story A Serious Man, made the comments while in Israel for an award ceremony.

Reports of Leo DiCaprio and Bar Refaeli split

Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli has broken up with Leonardo DiCaprio, according to the New York Post.

The newspaper said the couple, who have been involved since 2005, ended their relationship last week after weeks of speculation.

The split was described as amicable and because they had "grown apart".

LA anti-cult group criticises Cruise award

The executive director of an educational group on cults has criticised Simon Wiesenthal Centre for handing its highest honour, the Humanitarian Award, to actor Tom Cruise at a ceremony in Beverly Hills last week.

Mr Cruise received the award for his financial support of the centre and its Museum of Tolerance, for which the dinner alone raised $1.4 million.

Clueless star Alicia Silverstone names son after animal

Clueless star Alicia Silverstone has given birth to her first child - a boy she has called Bear Blu.

The Jewish actress, who was once named the world's "Sexiest Female Vegetarian" by animal rights organisation Peta, revealed the news on her personal blog.

Ms Silverstone, 34, said she and her husband, musician Christopher Jarecki were "all three in love".
