Russell Crowe rants that circumcision is 'barbaric and stupid'

Russell Crowe has described circumcision as "barbaric and stupid" in a venom-filled online debate on the subject.

The Australian Oscar-winning actor, known for courting controversy in media interviews, wrote on his Twitter page that it was immoral to circumcise male infants and said he would "take attentive parenting over barbarism".

The Rag Trade star Miriam Karlin dies at 85

The actress who starred as Golde in the original London production of Fiddler on the Roof has died of cancer at the age of 85.

Miriam Karlin, born Miriam Samuels to Orthodox Jewish parents in Hampstead, went on to appear in films including A Clockwork Orange and The Entertainer, the television series The Rag Trade and a long list of West End plays.

End of a New York era at Elaine's

Elaine's, the Manhattan restaurant that hosted everyone from Norman Mailer to Jack Nicholson has closed its doors for the final time.

Opened by Elaine Kaufman on Second Avenue in 1963, it quickly became a New York landmark and the place for celebrities to dine under the radar.

Woody Allen even used it as the location for the opening scene of the film Manhattan.

The teenage pop star, who delighted fans with a concert in Tel Aviv last month, was recently spotted sporting a new tattoo.

The tattoo, on his left ribcage, is of the Hebrew word Yeshua, translated into English as Jesus.

Concert pianist Marguerite Wolff has died at the age of 92

Ms Wolff had performed around the world during her lengthy career. Born in London, she made her debut at Wigmore Hall at the age of ten and began a lifelong collaboration with Hungarian pianist Louis Kentner in her late teens. In 1938 the JC described the young musician as "an accomplished pianist".
