In the 1970s, Redbridge boasted Europe’s largest Jewish population of 30,000. But a gradual decline as younger members decamped to north London accelerated between 2001 and 2011, during which it lost almost a third of its remaining population, falling from second to sixth among UK communities. In Clayhall alone, the number halved from 2,599 to 1,299.


King Solomon head Jo Shuter banned from teaching

The headteacher of King Solomon High School in Redbridge, Jo Shuter, has been banned from teaching after abusing expenses in a previous role.

Ms Shuter admitted a number of allegations of inappropriate claims, including £7,000 for a 50th birthday party, while head of the Quintin Kynaston Community Academy in London before a teaching standards panel last month.


Ilford Jewish Primary shares site with Hindus

Ilford Jewish Primary staff and pupils will be sharing their Barkingside site with a school for Hindu children.

The Avanti Court Primary is set to open in September. As construction work on the new IJPS building at the nearby King Solomon campus will take at least a year, the primaries will share some facilities.
