Gender segregation 'not Jewish law' says top rabbi

Israel's Sephardi chief rabbi has weighed into the ongoing issue of gender segregation in public areas.

In recent months there have been reports of Orthodox passengers enforcing a de facto segregation system on buses in Jerusalem and other areas, with woman who board told to sit at the back.

Election chaos as Sephardis choose new spiritual chief

Leaders of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews' Congregation are taking legal advice after a challenge to the result of last night's election of Rabbi David Bassous as their next spiritual head.

In a ballot of members yesterday, London-born Rabbi Bassous gained exactly the minimum two-thirds majority to secure the position, with 268 votes for him and 134 against.

Chief Rabbi: I did not attack Steve Jobs or Apple

Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks has clarified remarks he made about Steve Jobs, saying they were not meant as a personal attack on the late Apple founder.

The comments, made at a 70th anniversary dinner for the Council and Christians and Jews last week, were reported online in the Telegraph in a story headed “Chief Rabbi blames Apple for helping create selfish society”.

Rabbi charged in sexual assualt case

A well-known Israeli rabbi has been indicted over sexual assault allegations.

The Jerusalem prosecutors' office filed an indictment today charging Rabbi Mordechai "Motti" Elon with the sexual assault of a minor six years ago. According to the prosecutors the alleged victim, who was a student of 17 at the time, had visited the rabbi seeking advice.

Rabbis in Poland to discuss Dutch kosher meat ban

Several hundred rabbis are in Poland this week for a conference to discuss issues including the Dutch ban on kosher slaughter of animals.

It is the largest gathering of its type since Poland's Jewish community was decimated by the Nazis.

Permit wait keeps rabbi off work

Shenley Synagogue’s American-born rabbi, Natan Levy, has been forced to stop working until the United Synagogue can secure him a permit.

Rabbi Levy joined Shenley as part-time minister in 2008. He had planned to make aliyah this year but decided to remain with the Hertfordshire community.

The truth about our son - 40 years later

Susan Bergson never knew her baby boy.

He died in distress after an emergency Caesarian at a London hospital, 40 years ago. Immediately, he was taken away while her husband sought the advice of the United Synagogue on how to bury the body.

He was stunned to be told that the baby would have to be buried with the body of an anonymous, newly-deceased mother.
