Abbas: Palestinian UN bid will make things difficult

The Palestinian president has admitted that a unilateral bid for statehood will open a "difficult" situation in Middle East politics.

Mahmoud Abbas made the comments ahead of Friday's UN session in which the Palestinians are expected to ask the Security Council for full membership.

Jack Staw urges UK to back Palestinian state at UN

The former Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has called on MPs to support Palestinian plans for a unilateral statehood bid at the UN.

The British government has not confirmed whether it will support the Palestinians if a vote goes ahead, although the US has already vowed not to back the move.

Mr Carter, who oversaw the Camp David negotiations which secured peace between Israel and Egypt while in office, is well-known as a critic of the Israeli government.

Gaza and West Bank in timely dispute

Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank have found another subject to argue over.

As of this week, the two are now separated by an hour – not in terms of how long it takes to travel from one to the other, but in terms of time.

Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, moved the clocks back an hour at the beginning of Ramadan to make the fast easier.

Arab League to Abbas: UN bid in September is 'dangerous'

The general secretary of the Arab League has urged the Palestinian president to reconsider bidding for unilateral statehood at the United Nations next month.

Nabil El Araby made the comment in light of the heightened tension between Israel and Gaza, which was sparked when terrorists struck three separate locations in southern Israel last week, killing eight people.

Israel divided as PA declares statehood bid

The Palestinian Authority formally announced last weekend that it would seek unilateral recognition of an independent Palestinian state within the pre-1967 borders at the United Nations General Assembly next month. The Israeli government is still divided on how best to respond to the challenge.

At least 120 UN member-states are expected to support Palestinian statehood at the General Assembly.

Date set for Palestinian UN bid

The Palestinians are planning to take their unilateral bid for independence to the United Nations on September 20.

The Palestinian Foreign Minister, Riyad al-Malki, revealed the date in an interview with the AFP news agency on Saturday.

The Israeli president has told a delegation of US congressman that he hoped "both sides" would return to Middle East peace talks within the next month.

Shimon Peres called for negotiations to resume "before September", when the Palestinians plan to unilaterally declare statehood at the United Nations.

Israel may abandon Oslo Accords at UN

The Israeli government is considering abrogating the Oslo Accords if the Palestinian Authority gains recognition of an independent state at the United Nations General Assembly in September.
