Israel fears other European countries could follow Sweden's government in recognising a Palestinian state, a concern reinforced by the Commons vote.

The foreign ministry in Jerusalem did not attach major importance to last week's Commons motion, which does not compel the British government to change its policy.

Public opinion is evenly balanced on Israel and the Palestinians in the aftermath of the Gaza conflict, new polling has revealed.

One in five Britons describe their feeling toward Israel as "warm", a slight increase on the last figure in 2011.

But 62 per cent feel "cold" towards the state - almost the same amount as feel "cold" towards the Palestinians.

Parliament has voted to recognise the state of Palestine following a symbolic and unprecedented debate in the House of Commons.

A motion calling for the recognition of a Palestinian state was passed by 274 votes to 12 after MPs spent five hours debating the issue.
