The group, including government officials, visited the Kennedy Leigh Family Centre in Hendon and the Buckets and Spades short break facility and held discussions with Norwood's children and family specialists.

Lottery windfall helps Norwood on its travels

A £235,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund will help Norwood clients with learning disabilities to become more independent travellers.

The money will fund almost the entire cost of Freedom through Travel, a three-year scheme launching in June, which will use smartphone technology to provide "travel training" for 88 adults.

Unite representative Jamie Major said the union had negotiated improved terms for the front-line care staff who are having their salary reduced as part of Norwood measures to compensate for £4 million in lost local authority funding.

Eighty service users enjoy weekly lessons in horse care, dressage and riding skills at the Norwood-affiliated village, which houses 175 people in 120 acres of grounds.
