Shul scraps burial entry fees for middle-aged

One of Liberal Judaism's largest communities has taken the bold step of scrapping the entrance fee to its burial society for new middle-aged members.

From now, anyone aged between 50 and 69 joining Northwood and Pinner Liberal Synagogue will have the burial society entrance fee waived, potentially saving a couple more than £1,760.


Northwood appoints

Rabbi Aharon and Yehudit Zerbib are Northwood United Synagogue's new rabbinic couple, their appointment having been supported overwhelmingly in a members' vote. For the past three years, Rabbi Zerbib has been Chief Rabbi of Bulgaria and previously worked as a spiritual counsellor for young immigrants to Israel.


Shuls unite to educate

Harrow and Hertfordshire synagogues have begun hosting almost 3,000 pupils from 48 schools as part of Northwood's annual Holocaust Memorial Day programme.

Educational workshops with survivors are being hosted by the Northwood, Belmont, Borehamwood and Elstree, Bushey and Watford US communities, as well as by Northwood and Pinner Liberal.


BBYO leader is going global

A BBYO member from Northwood is the first European member of the youth movement's international board in 15 years.

Nick Phillips, 17, will take up the year-long position in July, following his election at the annual convention in Atlanta, Georgia.

One of 10 board members, he will serve as the international secretary and treasurer. He will also help to organise next year's convention.


Apology for academic barred for Israel views

The Belfast university which snubbed JC columnist Professor Geoffrey Alderman by withdrawing his invitation to a panel discussion on the Middle East has sent a written apology.

Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s University Professor Peter Gregson said he offered a “full and unreserved apology” to the University of Buckingham professor who could not speak at the Belfast Festival.

Professor Alderman, known for his outspoken pro-Israel views, is a guest professor at Ariel College in the West Bank.


Volunteer ‘Oscar’ for bereavement group

A Queen's Award for Voluntary Service recognises the contribution of Northwood and Pinner Liberal Synagogue's Bereavement Support Group over a 17-year period.

The group has provided comfort and support to those within and outside the Jewish community who have suffered a bereavement.

At Sunday's ceremony, local MP Nick Hurd - also Minister for Civil Society, whose department administers the Queen's Award - said it was the volunteers' Oscar.


Newlands & Northwood scare against Chigwell

Newlands & Northwood accumulated 194 from their 35 overs against Chigwell, including a fine 43 from Ben Wolpe.

They seemed set for a comprehensive victory as Chigwell slumped to 11-7, but were given a scare as Mike Myers and Kevin Sinclair put on a century partnership. However, Chigwell ended up 61 runs short.

Among other friendlies on Sunday, Belmont & Edgware 1sts (135-8) went down by three wickets to Olympians.
