Lib Dems manifesto condemns Israel and Hamas over ‘disproportionate force’

The Liberal Democrats have unveiled their policy on Israel and the Palestinians as part of their general election manifesto.

The party said it remained committed to a two-state solution to the conflict, and condemned “disproportionate force used by all sides”.

Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg unveiled the policy document at an event in London on Wednesday morning.

Nick Clegg pledges to continue Jewish school security funding

The Liberal Democrats will protect funding for security measures in Jewish schools if the party returns to government after May’s election, Nick Clegg has announced.

The Deputy Prime Minister said his party would guarantee the continuation of the £2.3m funding the Department for Education provides.

Jewish state schools use the money to provide additional security measures.

Nick Clegg urged to act against David Ward over Netanyahu tweets

The Israeli ambassador to Britain has called on the leader of the Liberal Democrats to take action against David Ward, over comments about Benjamin Netanyahu’s presence at Sunday’s unity rally in France.

Mr Benjamin Netanyahu joined other world leaders in Paris to show solidarity following the terrorist attacks on satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket .

Nick Clegg promises to protect Holocaust education funding

Holocaust education funding will be protected for the next five years if the Liberal Democrats return to government after the election, Nick Clegg has promised.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the £9 million budget for the Holocaust Education Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz programme would continue to 2020.

UK 'will suspend 12 arms export licences to Israel if war restarts'

The government has identified 12 arms export licences for equipment to Israel which it says it will suspend if the current ceasefire with Gaza collapses.

A review of licences conducted by the Business, Innovation and Skills department has concluded that the vast majority are not for items that could be used by the Israel Defence Force in operations in Gaza.

Clegg: stance 'needs to be even-handed'

Nick Clegg has been accused of "having no backbone" following his call for an arms embargo on Israel. The Liberal Democrat leader and Business Secretary Vince Cable, pushed for a full suspension of licences for arms exports.

Mr Clegg said the Israeli military had "overstepped the mark in Gaza" and Britain should act in response.

Ceasefire holds in Gaza as Nick Clegg criticises 'disproportionate' Israel

The latest ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is holding, more than an hour after it came into effect.

Both sides agreed to hold fire for five hours to allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza, after nine days of extended fighting.

The truce began at 10am (8am UK) local time and is due to expire at 3pm (1pm UK).
