Site launched to link global Jewry in recovery prayers

A teacher whose sister battled leukemia has developed a website for Jews around the world to unite in prayers for a speedy recovery.

Shira Kalish, from Long Island, came up with the idea of "linking the Jewish community through chesed (lovingkindness)" when she witnessed the response to her sister's illness.

Housekeeper arrested for kidnapping rabbi's baby daughter

Police have arrested a former housekeeper who lost her job and then allegedly abducted the baby daughter of her former employers, an Orthodox Jewish couple.

Gloria Suraez had worked for the Hayempour family for six weeks but when the summer job came to an end she concocted a plot to kidnap five-month-old Esther and take her to Uruguay.

The Philadelphia-born Odets gained world-wide fame in his career. When he died at the age of 57 he had authored almost 20 plays, writing on topics including the Nazis, the great depression and the trials of ordinary life.

His themes were not necessarily Jewish but, as the son of immigrants to America, his work often had a Jewish feel to it.

Teddy bear stolen from New York simcha

It was meant to be a celebration – but one family saw a brit milah turn into a farce when a teddy bear was stolen from the buffet.

A man, believed to be posing as a caterer, nabbed the teddy bear and balloon centrepieces from the tables of the simcha and walked away. He was forced to burst some of the balloons in order to make a quick exit.
