By Jennifer Lipman, December 15, 2010

The Nazis told the leader of the Palestinian Arabs that in return for his help during the Second World War he would have control of Palestine.

According to a report released this week by the US National Archives, based on thousands of declassified documents, the Nazis planned to make the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin al-Husseini, overall leader after the British were ousted and the 350,000-strong Jewish population was murdered.

Was this the ultimate Nazi hunt?

By Toby Axelrod, December 9, 2010

It appeared to be a remarkable sting, finally bringing to justice one of the men who helped to kick-start the Holocaust.

Former SS Lieutenant Colonel Bernhard Frank, who had rubbed shoulders with Nazi leaders, was living out his old age in Frankfurt, never suspecting that the American neo-Nazi who had been interviewing him for years was really out to get him.

Last week, the 97-year-old found out. The American, Mark Gould, a self-proclaimed Nazi-hunter, had posed as a Nazi to get close to Frank and interview him.

£80 to conceal alleged killer's Nazi tattoos

By Jennifer Lipman, December 7, 2010

A man on trial for murder in Florida has been awarded nearly £80 per day to cover up his Nazi-themed tattoos.

Lawyers for John Ditullio, in court for a double stabbing in 2006 which left one victim dead and another wounded, successfully argued that if jurors could see the Nazi symbols on his skin they would be prejudiced when making their decision.

The court agreed to pay for a professional make-up artist to come in on every day of the trial and conceal Mr Ditullio’s tattoos.

Nazi outfit next to Michael Jackson costume in Japanese store

By Jennifer Lipman, December 7, 2010

Japanese shoppers can no longer buy a “joke” Nazi costume after mangers at the country’s Don Quijote chain withdrew the outfit in response to complaints.

Until recently the costume - a black jacket with an armband featuring a red swastika – was on shelves at the discount stores next to outfits for dressing up as Michael Jackson or as a ninja.

The Nazi costume was on sale for £8 and came in a package with "Heil Hitler" written on it in Japanese and a drawing of a person resembling Adolf Hitler.

Third most-wanted Nazi suspect dies before trial

By Jennifer Lipman, November 22, 2010

A man suspected of helping murder 430,000 Jews during the Holocaust has died before he could be brought to trial.

Dr Efraim Zuroff of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre described it as “incredibly frustrating” to lose the chance to try Samuel Kunz for his alleged role in the Nazi massacres at the Belzec death camp in Poland.

Mr Kunz, third on the Simon Wiesenthal Centre’s list of wanted Nazis, was indicted in Germany in July for this and also for allegedly shooting ten Jews in two separate incidents.

Secret files: US gave Nazis safe haven

By Paul Berger, November 18, 2010

The American government provided a safe haven for Nazis after the Second World War, according to a Department of Justice report kept secret for four years.

"America, which prided itself on being a safe haven for the persecuted, became in some small measure a safe haven for persecutors as well," the 600-page report concludes.

The Department of Justice fought the release of the report since it was completed four years ago.

Last month, it released a heavily redacted version. But a full version was published by the New York Times at the weekend.

Jewish doctor refuses to treat Nazi tattoo patient

By Jennifer Lipman, November 12, 2010

A German Jewish doctor has refused to operate on a patient after seeing a Nazi tattoo on his arm.

The patient, in the city of Paderborn in North Rhine-Westphalia, had a graphic on his arm of a swastika and the Bundesadler (Imperial Eagle), the German national symbol adopted by the Nazi party.

According to the newspaper Bild, the doctor said it would go against his conscience to treat the 36-year-old man.

He told the patient’s wife: “I’m Jewish. I will not operate on your husband”.
