Egypt and Iran row over peace talk 'betrayal'

The Egyptian government has called off a visit by Iran’s foreign minister after he accused President Hosni Mubarak of betraying Arabs by supporting the Middle East peace talks.

Manouchehr Mottaki had been set to visit Cairo for a meeting of the non-aligned movement.

But the discussion has been postponed after Mr Mottaki criticised Arab leaders for their involvement in this week’s Washington negotiations.

Ayalon: Israel will act if Iran attacks

Israel’s deputy foreign minister has said that Israel will act against Iran if necessary and called on the Iranian people to act against the “aggressive dictatorial regime”.

Danny Ayalon, speaking during a radio broadcast which was then translated into Farsi, warned that if sanctions to stop Iran arming itself with nuclear weapons fail “the United States and other nations might consider other options."

"Israel is committed to defending its citizens and if attacked will act accordingly."

Ahmadinejad: 'Zionists' told of 9/11 in advance

The Iranian president has accused “Zionists” of knowing about the September 11 terror attacks in advance and reiterated his denial of the Holocaust.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told a conference in Tehran that no “Zionists” were killed in the World Trade Center, because "one day earlier they were told not to go to their workplace".

Five Israelis were killed when the two planes were flown into the Twin Towers in 2001.

Mr Ahmadinejad also claimed that there were no reports that revealed the names of the around 3,000 victims.

Ahmadinejad escapes assassination

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has survived an assassination attempt in Iran.

The Iranian president escaped any injury although others were wounded when his convoy was hit with an explosive.

He was travelling to the city of Hamadan, in western Iran, to make a speech.

Police arrested one person and an official said: "Investigations continue to find out who was behind it."

MP attacks Brazilian president

The Labour Rotherham MP has spoken of his “shock” and “profound sadness” in an open letter to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
