Abbas issues warning as hunger strikes continue

Palestinian groups and Israeli politicians have warned of clashes between security forces and protesters if one of the prisoners currently on hunger strike dies.

Some 1,600 prisoners currently on administrative detention in Israel, some for crimes against civilians, are on hunger strike to protest alleged solitary confinement, poor prison conditions and detention without trial.

PA spells out conditions for peace negotiations

The Palestinian Prime Minister, Salam Fayyad, boycotted a planned meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday.

The meeting, which was the first high-level contact between Israeli and Palestinian representatives since talks in Amman broke down nearly three months ago, was convened so that the Palestinian Authority could deliver its conditions for a renewal of negotiations.

Olmert: Abbas is partner for peace for Israel

Ehud Olmert, who resigned from his position in 2009 amid allegations of corruption, dismissed claims that Israel had no partner for negotiations. However he said that all options should be considered for dealing with the Iranian threat.

Abbas may return to UN

The Palestinian Authority is threatening to resume its attempt to gain recognition of a Palestinian state at the UN if Israel does not agree to freeze all settlement activity.

The ultimatum was delivered by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at a meeting of the Arab League on Sunday and in a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
