Israel fears blame for failure of peace talks

The Israeli government is concerned that if the newly revived peace talks between it and the Palestinians fail, it will be blamed — with severe diplomatic consequences.

Officials in Jerusalem have expressed fears that any collapse in the peace process would lead to a renewed diplomatic push aimed at forcing Israel to relinquish control of the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Are peace talks imminent? Rumours fly in Israel

Speculation is rife in the Israeli media that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has agreed to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the possibility of serious peace talks.

According to Israeli television, Mr Abbas has threatened to take unilateral action at the United Nations if Mr Netanyahu does not make a serious proposal during the meeting.

Newly appointed Palestinian PM hands in resignation

Recently-installed Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah handed in his resignation on Thursday night.

According to Palestinian sources, the move followed a heated dispute between Mr Hamdallah and his two deputies, Mohammed Mustafa and Ziad Abu Amru.

The prime minister has been in office less than a month.

Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad has resigned.

President Mahmoud Abbas accepted Mr Fayyad’s resignation after a brief meeting at the Muqata government compound in Ramallah on Saturday.

Rumours of Mr Fayyad’s resignation surfaced last week following his disagreement with Mr Abbas over the departure of finance minister Nabil Qassis.
