From Israeli hip-hop to Ashkenaizi cocktails – Limmud unveils programme for winter conference

The first North American Orthodox woman to use the title “rabbi” is to be one of the speakers at this month’s Limmud winter conference.

Rabbi Lila Kadegan, who graduated in summer from Yeshivat Maharat, an Orthodox women’s seminary in New York, will be teaching several classes at the event including one on inclusion and Jewish law.

Lawyer David Hoffman appointed new chair of Limmud

Manchester-based lawyer David Hoffman is to take over as chairman of Limmud at the beginning of next year.

The commercial barrister, who has chaired Limmud International and revived its regional events in his home city, was appointed by the organisation’s educational trustees to succeed Kevin Sefton, who has led it for the past three years.

Limmud will get 'refreshing' new look

The Limmud conference's switch from a university campus to a Hilton hotel will not affect its essential character, its organisers say.

Bookings will shortly open for the cross-communal event, which starts at the Hilton Metropole in Birmingham on December 27 after eight years at Warwick University.

Limmud director steps down

The senior figure of the annual conference dedicated to Jewish learning is expected to take another communal post shortly.

Limmud fans beat the jams

Harrow Limmud's ambition in moving to a larger venue paid off as it attracted double the number who came to its last staging two years ago.

A sell-out attendance of 1,000 enjoyed a choice of 134 sessions covering food, film, football and much more at JFS's Kenton premises on Sunday.

Loving the Limmud line-up

MP Ivan Lewis, Board of Deputies leaders Laura Marks and Alex Brummer and the UK's senior Sephardi rabbi, Joseph Dweck, were among the speakers who drew a crowd of 600 to Manchester Limmud on Sunday.

The programme at William Hulme's Grammar School covered subjects as diverse as antisemitism, meditation and circus skills.

Co-chair Rebecca Lewis said feedback had been overwhelmingly positive.

Limmud 2014: Dancers step up for Strictly contest

Limmud catering co-ordinator Josh Marting hora-ed his way to victory in the event's version of Strictly Come Dancing.

Josh Martin won the Nikki Millan Trophy after performing an energetic Israeli dance with partner Sophie Sumner, in the Strictly Limmud Dancing contest.

He earned the second highest score from the judges and the highest number of audience votes.
