Obama, Romney spar over Middle East in presidential debate

The Republican presidential hopeful accused his Democratic rival of putting "daylight between the US and Israel" during a heated exchange in Tuesday night's debate.

Mitt Romney said there were questions over his opponent's "whole policy" in the Middle East, citing the situations in Syria and Egypt and the recent fatal attack on the US envoy in Libya.

Libya riot: Israel calls Islam film producer 'unspeakable idiot'

Israel's Foreign Ministry has stressed that a film said by some to have triggered fatal rioting in Libya and Egypt had not been made with Israel's involvement.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor stated unequivocally that the film, made by a man who indentifies himself as an Israeli Jew, "has nothing to do whatsoever with Israel".

Condolences offered after deaths of four in Benghazi

Politicians from around the world have offered condolences to the family and friends of the victims of an attack on US embassy staff in Libya.

The US envoy to the North African country, Christopher Stevens, was killed along three others during a pro-Islamist riot broke in Benghazi on Tuesday night.

President Obama said in a statement that he strongly condemned "the outrageous attack".

Israeli model asks Blair to get Gaddafi lover out of jail

An Israeli model and actress, who had a six-year affair with Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, has asked Tony Blair to help secure the former dictator's son release from a jail in Libya.

Orly Weinerman, 41, had an intimate relationship with Colonel Gaddafi's son from 2005 to 2011, according to the Times of Israel.

Call for justice after death of Lockerbie bomber Megrahi

The mother of one of the victims of the Lockerbie bombing has said she feels no pity at the death of the man convicted of the attack.

Susan Cohen, whose only child, Theodora, died on Pan Am 103 when she was 20, said that the Libyan Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi deserved to die.

You may recall the arrest of two British journalists as spies in Libya after militiamen claimed to have found them with bandages which were "only issued by the Israeli Defence Forces".

The two men (working, ironically, for Iranian Press TV) have now been freed. Their Libyan captors had got in a linguistic muddle. It wasn't Hebrew writing on the bandages. It was Welsh.

Interview: David Gerbi

It's official - Dr David Gerbi still has his sense of humour. And given what happened to the 56-year-old psychiatrist earlier this year, that is quite surprising.

Two days after Yom Kippur, Gerbi had to leave Libya in a hurry after hundreds of protesters called for his deportation. He even received death threats. His crime? Defiling an "archaeological site".
