Ed Miliband defends Labour support for Palestine recognition

Labour leader Ed Miliband has defended his party’s support for the recognition of a Palestinian state.

Mr Miliband told pro-Palestinian activists that he was proud to support a backbench motion in the Commons last month which urged the government to acknowledge statehood immediately.

Claims that Jewish donors have deserted the Labour Party in response to Ed Miliband's stance on the Gaza conflict have been dismissed by leading Labour supporters.

They said financial support for the party from within the Jewish community had been declining for more than a decade.


Ten arrested near Luciana Berger’s Liverpool office

Police have refused to link the arrest of a gang of suspected neo-Nazis close to an office used by Jewish MP Luciana Berger with the hate campaign being waged against her.

Ten people were questioned after being held yards from a site where Ms Berger regularly holds surgeries for local constituents.

Armed police and forensics teams searched a number of properties following the arrests.

Campaigners against antisemitism have attacked reaction to a Sunday newspaper story which suggested Jewish donors were abandoning Labour over Ed Miliband’s stance on the Gaza conflict.

The Independent on Sunday’s front page story carried the headline “Jewish donors drop ‘toxic’ Miliband” and claimed communal support for the party had ebbed away.

The growth of antisemitism in Britain should serve as a wake-up call to those who think Jew-hatred is a thing of the past, Labour leader Ed Miliband has said.

Mr Miliband said he had spoken to Jewish families who expressed concern for their futures in Britain and urged a zero tolerance approach to tackle the problem of antisemitism.


Peer who created the Barnett public spending formula dies

Lord Barnett, the Jewish peer who gave his name to a famous public spending formula, has died aged 91.

He served as Chief Secretary to the Treasury in the Wilson and Callaghan Labour governments of the 1970s.

During that time he oversaw the creation of what became known as the Barnett Formula, the mechanism used to split public funding between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.


Ed Miliband condemns 'appalling' antisemitic abuse of Luciana Berger

Labour leader Ed Miliband has condemned the antisemitic abuse targeted at his shadow cabinet colleague Luciana Berger.

Mr Miliband said the abuse was “utterly appalling” and urged social media companies to do more to tackle the problem.

The JC had earlier revealed the extent of the attacks – including death threats – aimed at Ms Berger in the past ten days.

The jailing of an internet troll who sent antisemitic messages to MP Luciana Berger has sparked a wave of copycat abuse targeting the Labour shadow cabinet member.

Merseysider Garron Helm was handed a four-week prison term on Monday after admitting sending an “obscene” Hitler-related tweet to Ms Berger.

A 21-year-old man with links to an extremist group has been jailed for four weeks for sending an “obscene” antisemitic tweet to Liverpool MP Luciana Berger.

Garron Helm, 21, of Thomson Road, Litherland, Merseyside, pleaded guilty at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Monday to sending an offensive, indecent or obscene message.
