Israeli activist: ‘Ecology can bring peace’

The former deputy mayor of Jerusalem has said that Israelis and Palestinians can achieve peace by working together on environmental issues.

Naomi Tsur campaigned on green issues throughout her five-year term, and resigned in 2013 over what she saw as mayor Nir Barkat’s decision to downgrade environmental policies.

Palestinian statehood debated in the House of Lords

The latest parliamentary debate on Palestinian statehood has taken place in the House of Lords.

Peers discussed the same point that MPs voted on last October – whether the British government should recognise Palestine alongside Israel ahead of a peace agreement in the region.

The session was led by former Liberal Party leader Lord Steel. He said Israel should negotiate with Hamas.

Two IDF soldiers killed in clash on Lebanon border

The IDF has confirmed two soldiers were killed and a number of others wounded in an incident on the Lebanese border.

Earlier reports suggested four people had been killed.

An IDF patrol was hit by rocket fire in the Har Dov area. Initial reports suggested anti-tank missiles and grenades had been fired by Hizbollah terrorists on the border.

Daniel Taub honours righteous gentiles at Foreign Office ceremony

The Foreign Office has hosted a special event with the Israeli embassy ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day, in which three righteous gentiles were honoured.

Israeli Ambassador Daniel Taub and Minister for the Middle East Tobias Ellwood, who led the ceremony, also told more than 100 guests that Holocaust education was more vital now than ever.

Shimon Peres to be guest of honour at London dinner

Shimon Peres will be the guest speaker at the Zionist Federation’s gala dinner in London in May.

The former Israeli president will be honoured by the charity with a special tribute night in front of an expected 1,000 diners.

Mr Peres, who retired as Israel’s head of state in July last year, has not spoken in Britain since 2008.

Israeli bung investigation widens

The investigation into kickbacks and embezzlement of Israeli state funds, focusing mainly on members of the Yisrael Beiteinu party, took a bizarre turn this week.

It emerged that one of the central suspects, a former press adviser to party leader Avigdor Lieberman, disappeared six months ago in Ukraine and may have been killed.
