General in Israel for secret Iran talks

November 3, 2011

High-level defence talks - with Iran at the top of the agenda - took place this week in Britain and Israel as reports of a possible strike against Iran's nuclear programme intensified.

Defence Minister Ehud Barak arrived in London on Wednesday for talks with his UK counterparts, immediately after a visit to Israel by the Chief of the Defence Staff, General Sir David Richards.

Female journalist elected as new leader of Israel's Labour party

A former journalist and television presenter has been chosen as the next leader of Israel's Labour party.

Shelly Yachimovich triumphed over former Defence Minister Amir Peretz on Wednesday with 54 percent of the vote.

Ms Yachimovich, 51, has been in politics for just six years and before that hosted various current affairs programmes.

Israel's tent city protesters begin packing up

After the largest protest since the “tent city” protests in Israel began, activists are beginning to pack up their tents, promising to move on to the “next phase”.

On Saturday, more than 400,000 Israelis demonstrated across the country. Around 250,000 gathered in Tel Aviv's Kikar Hamedina.

Yitzhak Shamir's wife Shulamit mourned

The wife of Israel's seventh prime minister has died at the age of 88.

Shulamit Shamir, who was born in Bulgaria in 1923, is survived by her husband Yitzhak.

He led Israel for two separate terms as prime minister, between 1983 and 1984 and between 1986 and 1992.

Israelis train for attack

Israel this week completed a five-day national emergency exercise designed to test the co-operation between the IDF, civilian emergency services, government departments and local authorities in the case of missiles being fired on Israeli cities.

The scenario for the annual exercise was a war in which missiles are fired on Israel from Lebanon, Syria, the Gaza Strip and Iran.

Daniel Taub to be Israel's next UK ambassador

Daniel Taub, the Israeli Foreign Ministry's deputy legal counsel will be the next Israeli ambassador to the UK.

British-born Mr Taub will replace Ron Prosor, who is now Israel’s ambassador the UN.

The appointment was decided by a senior committee at the Foreign Ministry, chaired by director-general Raphael Barak.
