Co-operative suffers fall in profits

Profits at the Co-operative Group dropped by 55 per cent in the first half of 2012, the company has revealed.

Sales in the group’s supermarkets fell by 1.2 per cent in the six months to June 30. Operating profits were down 16 per cent to £119m.

The group’s banking division also suffered a 67.9 per cent drop.

Charity group chairman explains Chief Rabbi resignation

The chairman of a dialogue group has defended its work on Israel and the Palestinians and attempted to explain the episode which led Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks to resign as its patron.

Canon Guy Wilkinson insisted that the Wyndham Place Charlemagne Trust had not encouraged its members to back an anti-Israel campaign when it circulated details of an initiative in a newsletter.

Barnet councillor loses appeal over 'anti-Israel' residents

A councillor who dismissed residents’ complaints about a company with links to Israel has lost an independent investigation into the case.

Former Barnet mayor Brian Coleman said that concerns about waste management company Veolia’s involvement with the North London Waste Authority were “anti-Israel nonsense”.

Anger as anti-Israel video spoof claims Welsh Assembly backing

Anti-Israel campaigners have been using the stamp of the Welsh Assembly to give legitimacy to an offensive video attack on Israel.

The video on the Swansea Telly online channel is narrated by “Paul”, who describes himself as an “allegedly unbiased reporter for the BBC Zionist network, reporting from Zionist Games at the Gaza Strip”.

Israel boycotters turn attention to Edinburgh culture meeting

Anti-Israel campaigners have revealed plans to disrupt a meeting of international politicians due to discuss culture in Edinburgh this week.

The first International Culture Summit will be held in the Scottish capital on Monday and Tuesday, bringing together culture ministers from Olympic nation as well as scores of other figures from the arts world.

Israel boycotters have Cirque du Soleil in their sights

Israel boycotters block Barenboim's orchestra from Jerusalem concert

A concert by an orchestra that aims to promote harmony between Israelis and Palestinians has been cancelled after supporters of a cultural boycott of Israel raised objections.

Daniel Barenboim's West-East Divan orchestra, which works to bring together Arab and Israeli performers and break down the divide between the two groups, was set to perform on Tuesday at the Mount of Olives.
