Mass walkout during Ahmadinejad UN speech

British, American and French diplomats led a walkout at the United Nations general assembly during a virulently anti-Jewish and anti-Israel speech by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Mr Ahmadinejad infuriated many delegates with claims of a 'Jewish conspiracy'.

Israel 'would consider Iran attack'

Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister has said it would not rule out an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, despite alleged assurances to the contrary to Russia.

Danny Ayalon said: "I don't think that, with all due respect, the Russian President [Dmitry Medvedev] is authorised to speak for Israel and certainly we have not taken any option off the table."

Echoing Mr Ayalon's sentiments, IDF chief Lt Gen Gabi Ashkenazi stressed that Israel had "the right to defend itself and all options are on the table".

Ahmadinejad: 'Iran's duty to confront Israel'

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has told Iranians that the Holocaust is a "lie", and that confronting Israel was an Iranian's "national and religious duty".

Speaking at the anti-Israel Quds Day rally at Tehran University, Mr Ahmadinejad said: "The Holocaust is a pretext for the creation of the Zionist regime and is false. It is a lie based on an unprovable and mythical claim. “

Jews lobby for Iran sanctions

American Jewish organisations are intensifying their calls for the US Congress to enact strict sanctions on Iran, as Tehran continues to make progress on its nuclear programme.

Their activism comes amidst signs that the US might be getting more serious about sanctions. But they might find that the hardest opposition comes from Europeans, whose companies will be hurt by the measures.

Congress proposed sanctions legislation in the spring but did not attempt to enact it in order to give the new US administration time to see if diplomacy could work.

Group lobbies against Ahmadinejad hotel stay

A high-profile advocacy group is campaigning to stop a top New York hotel from hosting Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad next week.

United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) was founded by diplomats Dennis Ross and Richard Holbrooke, both of whom serve in the Obama administration, and its president is Mark Wallace, a former US ambassador to the UN.

Ahmadinejad and his terror-suspect minister

The nomination of General Ahmad Vahidi as Iranian Defence Minister has shocked the international community.

General Vahidi is wanted by Interpol for his alleged role in the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community centre in Argentina.

Three arrested in Iran for 'devil worship'

An Iranian news agency has claimed that police in the north west Iranian province of Ardabil arrested three people, including a Jewish woman, for devil worship.

The Fars news agency, a governmental news body, said: “Two men and a Jewish woman, who were promoting the cult of Satan worship among the youth of Parsabad town, have been arrested,”

It also claimed more than 100 items, including jewellery made from human skulls, have been seized from the arrested people.

Oil boss plans Iran investment

Dr Alexander Machkevitch, one of the world’s richest businessmen and president of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, has a business plan — for Iran.

Once the current regime is replaced and sanctions are lifted, he wants to invest in the country’s oil industry, as Iran loses capital by not refining its own oil.

“I discussed the plan with a group of Iranian businessmen who are quite tired of the situation in the country but it will be possible only with political support,” Mr Machkevitch said. “I am very optimistic.”

Kaufman: Israel’s Gaza ‘oppression’ is like Iran

Sir Gerald Kaufman gave a scathing description of the actions of the State of Israel, comparing its “oppression” of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank with apartheid South Africa and the current Iranian regime.

Speaking at a Watford Friends of Salfeet meeting last night, the MP for Manchester Gorton described Iran as a “loathsome regime” but unlike Israel “at least it keeps its totalitarian theocracy to within its own borders”.
