Jewish and interfaith groups ‘saddened’ by Islamophobia

The Board of Deputies, senior rabbis and the Joseph Interfaith Foundation have together released a statement on behalf of the Jewish community expressing their “sadness and concern” at a recent rise in Islamophobic attacks following the murder of soldier Lee Rigby.

The statement said that recent bombings of mosques such as those in Walsall and Wolverhampton were “truly shocking”.

When interfaith friends fall out

I am not a religious person, although I have come close to some sort of reverie at times when in the presence of the culture of the great faiths.

I am easily seduced by a well-proportioned cathedral, mosque or synagogue. In Jerusalem, the Western Wall, the Dome of the Rock and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre all do it for me. But I am not a person of faith. I just can’t fake it.

Vivian Wineman elected co-chair of Interfaith Network

The organisation, founded in 1987, brings together groups and academic bodies from different faiths to develop positive interfaith relations.

Both Israeli chief rabbis cancel on the Archbishop of Canterbury

The Archbishop of Canterbury was unable to meet Israel’s two chief rabbis this week, after scheduled talks with both Rabbis were cancelled.

Archbishop Justin Welby was due to sit down with Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger and Sephardi Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar on Thursday. However, plans were thrown into disarray when Rabbi Metzger was placed under house arrest amid corruption charges.

Jewish security group to protect mosque

Jewish volunteer security group Shomrim has offered to protect a London mosque threatened by anti-Muslim violence.

Members of the Stamford Hill -based organisation met mosque leaders at the Cazenove Road Mosque and Community Centre , in Stoke Newington, at the weekend.

Imam speaks at shul after visiting Auschwitz

A prominent American imam addressed members of Belsize Square Synagogue on Shabbat on his way home from a visit to Auschwitz with Muslim leaders.

Indian-born Muzammil Siddiqui, chairman of the Fiqh [Islamic law] Council of North America, spent the weekend in London after the trip to Germany and Poland.

Church agrees to tone down anti-Israel report

A “truly hurtful” report about Israel is to be rewritten in an attempt to diffuse a row between the Church of Scotland and the Jewish community.

The discussion document compiled by the Church’s church and society council provoked outrage after apparently suggesting that Jewish claims to the land of Israel could be invalidated by the treatment of Palestinians.

Pope Francis and Rabbi Skorka: firm friends but football rivals
