Gay marriage: shuls ready

Gay Liberal and Reform couples are already making plans for wedding ceremonies after the House of Commons this week approved the Same-Sex Marriage Bill.

The two movements have already said they will conduct same-sex weddings if they are made legal.

A wry smile might have crossed the lips of anyone who read the JC letters page last week. Not often do you find the chairman of the Reform movement jumping to the defence of the Chief Rabbi, after he had been attacked for opposing government plans to introduce civil marriage for gay and lesbian couples.

Lottery cash funds Liberal study of gay Jews in Britain

Liberal Judaism has won a grant of nearly £60,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to record the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Jews in Britain since the Second World War.

It plans to create an archive of audio-visual interviews, a resource pack for schools and a touring exhibiton on the experiences of LGBT Jews.

Chief Rabbi’s error

Opinions on gay marriage vary. In that, the Jewish community is no different from the rest of society. As the Chief Rabbi of the United Synagogue, it is hardly a surprise that Lord Sacks opposes the idea. Plainly, he believes that gay marriage is contrary to the Torah. And he has as much right oppose to gay marriage as anyone else.

It is a matter of great regret that Lord Sacks has chosen to make a statement in his official capacity opposing the right of gay and lesbian men and women to marry. Even if same-sex marriage is contrary to Jewish law, it does not compromise the position of Orthodox Jews to let others marry as they wish. Lord Sacks has sought to influence how the generality of the population leads its life.

Gay group celebrates landmark

In 1972, a small advert in Gay News attracted 190 people to a meeting to launch a UK organisation for gay Jews.

This weekend, the Jewish Gay and Lesbian Group celebrates its 40th anniversary with a chavurah led by three rabbis, a party for 150 members and supporters and a Jewish East End walking tour.

Chief Rabbi will oppose gay marriage

The Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks has finally broken his silence on gay and lesbian marriages and opposed government plans to introduce it.

In a submission to a Home Office consultation, the London Beth Din (the Chief Rabbi’s court), and the Rabbinical Council of the United Synagogue, stated that same-sex unions were “against Jewish law”.
