Israel launches air strikes after civilian is shot dead

Israel has launched a series of air strikes after an Israeli man was killed by sniper fire along the border with the Gaza Strip.

According to reports, the man was a 52-year-old civilian employed by the Israeli Defence Ministry to make repairs to a section of the Israel-Gaza border fence damaged after storms.

He was shot in the chest and died on route to hospital in Beersheba.

Isolated Hamas buries the hatchet with Iran

Hamas announced last week that it was “resuming” its relations with Iran after the Palestinian movement’s position on the Syrian Civil War caused it to fall out with the Assad regime’s main backers.

The announcement was made by senior Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar in Gaza following talks between Hamas officials and Iranian diplomats in Beirut last month.

Hamas leader’s granddaughter treated in Israeli hospital

One of the granddaughters of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has been transferred from Gaza to an Israeli hospital for urgent medical treatment.

The news emerged when Haniyeh’s son, Abdul Salam, wrote on his Facebook page that his daughter, Amal Haniyeh, aged one, had crossed the "green line" which separates Israel from the Palestinian territories.

Dutch official report supporting Hamas ‘promotes extremism’

A Jewish human-rights group has asked the Dutch Prime Minister to reject an advisory report that “demonises Israel”.

Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, accused the Dutch parliament’s advisory council on international affairs of producing a one-sided report on the Middle East conflict.

‘Hamas used Chinese bank to pay families of terrorists’

A hamas scheme to launder money in Chinese bank accounts has been revealed in an ongoing court case in the US.

The allegations emerged in a suit being brought against the Bank of China by the family of Daniel Weltz, a 16-year-old American killed in a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv in April 2006.

Amnesty urges Hamas to stop Gaza executions

Amnesty International has attacked Hamas’ plans to carry out executions in Gaza following the Muslim festival of Eid.

The charity said the threat facing prisoners sentenced to death was “deeply disturbing”.

Hamas’ Attorney General in Gaza announced plans last week to execute a number of what he said were “convicted criminals” as a “lesson” to other Palestinians.

Hamas not at the table, but it could ruin the party

Envoy’s Hamas warning

Britain’s ambassador to Israel believes trade restrictions imposed on Gaza have “enriched” Hamas and weakened Israel’s security.

Matthew Gould said he was in “no doubt about Hamas’ lack of readiness to be a partner for peace”, but added that Israeli sanctions on trade to the Palestinian territory were “hurting moderate businessmen” and “ordinary Gazan workers”.
