9/11 mosque opponents ‘demonising Islam'

The Anti-Defamation League’s national director has criticised opponents of the Ground Zero mosque for using it to justify scare tactics and as an excuse for “outrageous comments about Islam”.

Abraham Foxman, who has previously said the mosque and Islamic centre should be built elsewhere, warned that the controversy was being exploited by some “to demonise Muslims”.

But writing on the Huffington Post website he also said that supporters are wrong to label their opponents as bigoted.

Opposing 9/11 mosque 'like antisemitism'

The wife of the imam behind the plan to build a mosque and Islamic centre in Manhattan, just by the site of the 9/11 attack, has likened opposition to the proposal to prejudice against Jews.

Daisy Khan said she was “deeply concerned” about the negative reaction to the project, known as the Cordoba Initiative.

Mrs Khan, whose husband Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is the moderate Muslim in charge of the plan, said: "This is like a metastasised antisemitism. That's what we feel right now.

"It's not even Islamophobia, it's beyond Islamophobia - it's hate of Muslims.”

Jewish groups differ over 9/11 mosque plan

A row has broken out between rival American Jewish groups over the proposal to build a mosque and Islamic centre in Manhattan just metres from the site of the 9/11 attacks.

The plan by American Muslims to build a community centre by Ground Zero, where the World Trade Centre towers once stood, has the support of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and prominent Jewish lawyer Alan Dershowitz.
