Charedis raise funds for rapist

A strictly Orthodox community is running a fundraising campaign for a convicted child molester who avoided jail by hiding in London for two years.

Nachman Stal lived secretly among the Charedi community in Stamford Hill, north London, having fled Israel in 2006 after being found guilty of sodomy and indecent assault of a minor.

The father-of-nine lost an extradition hearing in June and is now serving his sentence in an Israeli prison.

Members of the Stamford Hill community are appealing for money to support his wife and children, who have also returned to Israel.

Two men shot at LA synagogue

Two men have been shot and wounded outside a Los Angeles synagogue in what police described as a hate crime.

Maor Ben-Nissan, 38, and Allen Lasry, 53, were shot in the car park of the Adat Yeshurun Valley Synagogue in North Hollywood, an Orthodox Sephardi synagogue to which they both belonged.

The men had arrived for the morning service at 6.30am when a gunman approached them and shot each of them in the legs, without speaking or taking anything from them.

Machete gang who targeted Jews rearrested

Convicted members of a machete gang which violently targeted a Jewish family and business in a string of robberies in Manchester have been re-arrested after being released early from prison.

Greater Manchester Police admitted to losing track of two gang members, both men and aged 20 and 21, on Tuesday after then pair breached their release terms. They were arrested only hours later for attempted burglary in Wigan after being spotting acting suspiciously outside a house. They had served only six months of their two year jail sentences before being released.

Solicitor jailed for stealing from dead clients

A solicitor has been jailed for stealing £43,450 left by dead clients in their wills.

Alan Benstock, a former deputy coroner, used the money to fund his daughter’s private education, cover family medical bills and pay the mortgage on his home in Chapel Allerton, Leeds.

The 51-year-old admitted nine charges of theft over a four-month period in 2006.

He had set up a charitable trust into which he paid the money from three dead clients’ wills. He did not register the trust with the Charity Commission and kept it secret from colleagues.

Orthodox man jailed for sex offences

An Orthodox academic has been jailed for four months after police found dozens of images of children in his computer.

Eight years ago Dr Benjamin Yudkin, 41, of Wolvercote, Oxford, escaped a custodial sentence after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting a nine-year-old child in Reading.

Last week Yudkin appeared for sentence at Oxford Crown Court having previously admitted three counts of possession of indecent images.

Stamford Hill sex predator fails in bid to clear his name

A man who had sex with a 15-year-old Orthodox Jewish boy has failed to clear his name in the Court of Appeal.

Najibullah Ahmadzai, 25, of Walthamstow, was found guilty at Snaresbrook Crown Court in June last year of sexual activity with a child.

Deemed a danger to the public, he was sentenced to indefinite imprisonment for public protection and ordered to serve at least three-and-a-half years behind bars before he could apply for parole.

He had sex with his victim, a member of the Orthodox Jewish community, after they met at a Stamford Hill internet cafe, where Ahmadzai worked.

Anti-Israel protestor cleared of police attack

A founding member of an anti-Israel group has been cleared of attacking a policeman during a protest against Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

Deborah Fink, of Jews for Boycotting Israeli Goods (JBIG), was arrested in London in May while demonstrating as Mr Lieberman spoke at an event at the home of JNF chairman Samuel Hayek.

Ms Fink was in a group of around a dozen protestors who were asked to move by police.

When they refused they were moved by officers. She admitted putting up “strong physical resistance” before she was arrested.

Richard Caring offers £15,000 for stag killer

The Jewish owner of The Ivy restaurant is offering £15,000 reward for capturing the vandal who shot two stags on his estate.

Police are investigating the possibility that the attacks may have been intended to send a threatening message to Mr Caring.

Richard Caring, who also owns celebrity hotspot Annabel’s nightclub, has now hired former SAS soldiers as security guards for his estate in Exmoor.

The businessman, who is 146th on the Sunday Times Rich List and worth an estimated £360 million, called the hunter “a lunatic with a high-powered rifle”.

Polanski's supporters demand 'immediate release'

Jewish filmmakers and artists have spoken out against the arrest of Rosemary's Baby director Roman Polanski.

Woody Allen, actor Wim Wenders and British director Stephen Frears are among the 138 Hollywood names who have signed a petition pledging to fight Mr Polanski’s extradition to the US.

Mr Polanski, who is a Holocaust survivor, has not returned to the US since pleading guilty to drugging and raping 13-year-old Samantha Geimer in 1977. He currently resides in France where he holds citizenship.

Special interests of Charedi cops

Patrolling the Golders Green streets, Nochum Dewhurst and David Baddiel look like any other policemen on the beat.

But the helmets of the young special constables cover black kipot — they are the area’s first Charedi law officers.

SPC Dewhurst, 21, a product of Menorah Grammar School, has been a special for two years while SPC Baddiel, 27, is a recent recruit. Educated at Pardes House, he is related to his TV personality namesake.
