Five arrests after theft spree

Greater Manchester Police say they have made arrests and stopped a spate of burglaries which have terrified Jewish residents in Prestwich.

Over the past two weeks eight burglaries have been reported affecting mainly Jewish homes. Some have taken place on the same night, just streets apart.

How a synagogue leader helped gangs stash millions

A businessman who ran a corrupt safe deposit company which had millions of pounds worth of criminal assets seized has been jailed for four and a half years.

Milton Woolf, former chairman of the rabbinic search committee at New London Synagogue, charged criminals up to £70,000 to stash their loot in deposit boxes "with no questions asked".

Diamond dealer pleads for prison

A Jewish diamond dealer begged a New York City judge last week to let him remain in prison rather than face retribution for testifying against a mafioso.

Brian Greenwald, former president of Doppelt & Greenwald in Manhattan's Diamond District, made the plea at his sentencing at Manhattan Federal Court last week.

Rodin sculpture stolen from Israel Museum

A valuable sculpture from the 1890s by French artist Auguste Rodin has been stolen from the Israel Museum.

The work, given to the Jerusalem museum by Broadway impresario Billy Rose, went missing at the end of last year. The museum was being renovated at the time and has since reopened.

Leeds teens are mugged at knifepoint

Nine Jewish teenage boys were robbed at knifepoint close to The Zone youth club in Leeds on Saturday night.

Two men, described as white and aged between 15 and 18, threatened the boys and made off with money and mobile phones.

Four of the victims suffered facial injuries, one receiving hospital treatment for a laceration. They had been walking to the club to attend a music event.

Prestwich crime spree

A four-day burglary spree has rattled residents of the King's Road area of north Manchester.

Three homes on Tewkesbury Drive, Richmond Avenue and Harrogate Avenue in the predominantly Jewish area of Prestwich were targeted in the early hours of the morning between last Thursday and Sunday.

Lawyer's court date over fund theft

A top lawyer is to face two charges of theft totalling £95,000.

David Friesner, one of Manchester's most highly regarded barristers, will appear before Leeds Magistrates' Court over £81,500 of missing funds at his former St John Street Chambers in Manchester.

He also faces a separate charge of stealing £13,500 which was paid to him by the Crown Prosecution Service.
