Jury out on 'cocaine and sex' rabbi

The jury remains out at Manchester Crown Court after nearly five hours of deliberating whether Rabbi Baruch Chalomish and his co-defendent, Nasir Abbas, were indeed running commercial cocaine parties.

Summing up the case, Judge Michael Henshell directed the jury of five men and seven women to return only a unanimous verdict on each defendant's guilt over each count of possession of a controlled drug and possession with intent to supply cocaine.

Cocaine rabbi 'stereotyped as drug dealer'

The rabbi accused of financing a professional cocaine supply business, which involved prostitutes and run by a Muslim partner, is the "victim of a racial stereotype of rich Jew financing a poor Muslim".

That was the claim made by Rabbi Baruch Chalomish's defence barrister, Jonathan Goldberg QC, in his final speech to the jury in Manchester Crown Court today.

Kosher abattoir owner faces 1,255 years for fraud

The former CEO of America’s largest kosher slaughterhouse has been convicted on 86 charges of fraud.

A South Dakota jury declared Sholom Rubashkin, formerly of the Agriprocessors kosher meatpacking plant in Iowa, guilty of bank, mail and wire fraud; making false statements to a bank; money laundering; and ignoring an order to pay livestock providers. He was acquitted on five counts.

A date for sentencing has yet to be announced but Rubashkin, 50, could face up to 1,255 years in jail.
He still faces trial on 72 charges relating to immigration violations.

Rabbi took kosher food to five-day coke binge

Admitting to snorting large quantities of cocaine and having sex with prostitutes, a rabbi accused of running a cocaine supply business told a court that he had taken kosher food with him to eat during a five-day drug binge at the Manchester city centre apartment where he was arrested.

Rabbi Baruch Chalomish has pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing cocaine, but denies two counts of possession of cocaine with intent to supply. He stands co-accused with a convicted drug dealer, Nasir Abbas, who has failed to attend the trial and is being tried in his absence.

Rabbi ‘offered girls cocaine for sex’

A rabbi caught with more than £15,000 in cash and 100g of cocaine was dealing to girls in exchange for “sexual services” a court heard.

Baruch Chalomish, 54, and his friend Nasir Abbas, were caught in possession of cocaine with a purity of up to 80 per cent by police who searched a serviced apartment in January this year.

Police later searched the rabbi’s home on Upper Park Road, in Salford, and discovered a further 50g of cocaine scattered around the house in different containers.

Finchley man fined for filming up shopper's skirt

A Finchley man was fined £350 for filming up a woman’s skirt in Sainsbury’s.

Alan Howard Rose, 48, a legal executive from North Finchley admitted filming the woman with a camera hidden in his bag.

He was fined at City of London magistrates’ court for disorderly behaviour and has been forced to resign from his law firm, which has not been identified.

Call to bar criminals from aliyah

The arrests of two alleged killers who were allowed to immigrate to Israel despite previous brushes with the law have strengthened calls for a change in the Law of Return.

Yaakov (Jack) Teitel, who was arrested a month ago by the Shin Bet (Security Service), is suspected of carrying out a long list of terror attacks on Palestinians, left-wing and gay-rights activists, messianic Jews and police, including two murders of Palestinians in 1997. The murders were carried out while Teitel was still an American tourist living on the Kfar Tapuach settlement.

Jewish 'terrorist': God is proud of me

Jewish “terrorist” Ya’akov Teitel, who is charged with the murder of two Palestinians, has told an Israeli court: “God is proud of me.”

Mr Teitel, 37, an American immigrant who lives in the Shvut Rachel settlement in the West Bank with his Manchester-born wife Rivka, is charged with 14 offences.

Charges include two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder, and include alleged attacks on gay, left-wing and messianic Jews.

He is accused of murdering a Palestinian taxi driver in East Jerusalem and a Palestinian shepherd in the West Bank.

Orthodox woman hospitalised after attempted mugging

A religious woman who was hospitalised after an attempted mugging outside the Shefa Mehadrin Kosher Deli in north Manchester is appealing with police for information which can lead to her attackers’ arrest.

Despite 14 witnesses to the incident on Tuesday of last week, police have not caugh the two men, described as white, in their 20s and dressed in dark clothing.
