Police death motorist walks free

An Israeli has walked free from court after admitting causing the death by careless driving of an off-duty motorcycle police officer.

Liron Shnaider, 26, of Finchley Road, Golders Green, north west London, was given 20 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, and 100 hours’ community service when he appeared for sentencing at Isleworth Crown Court on Monday.

He was also disqualified from driving for two years and must sit tests before he can drive in Britain again.

Rabbi's finger bitten off at Chanucah celebration

A man is alleged to have bitten off a rabbi’s finger at a public Chanucah celebration in Vienna.

Rabbi Dov Grussman was responding to apparent antisemitic jibes from the Muslim man, who is said to have hurled himself at the Chabad Rabbi and punched him.

During the struggle, the man is alleged to have bitten the rabbi, severing part of his finger. He was later arrested by Austrian police.

Rabbi Grussman was taken to hospital where doctors attempted to reattach the severed finger. He is currently being monitored for infection from the injury.

Leeds United ex- director in blackmail charge

Former property magnate and director of Leeds United Simon Morris has been charged with conspiracy to blackmail.

Mr Morris, 32, was declared bankrupt a year after his business empire SRM Holdings Group collapsed with debts of around £50 million.

The charges come after a long investigation by West Yorkshire police into the demise of the business.

He will appear before magistrates in Leeds next week, jointly charged with an unnamed 49-year-old man from Hyde, Cheshire.

His co-accused is also charged with possession of a firearm and possession of an offensive weapon.

Attack on Stamford Hill woman

A strictly Orthodox woman has been attacked after she disrupted an armed burglar in her home in Stamford Hill.

Police were called at 7.48am on Tuesday to reports of a burglar armed with a knife at an address in St Andrew’s Grove.

The burglar was disturbed by a woman, aged in her 50s, who was attacked by the male suspect, during which she was hit in the face and received a bloody nose and cracked tooth.

The suspect then made off with cash and jewellery. Police searched the area with a helicopter but failed to find the suspect.

No arrests have been made.

Rabbi cleared of supplying cocaine faces rehab

The rabbi standing trial for supplying cocaine at a lavish party for rich doctors, businessmen and prostitutes has been cleared by a jury at Manchester Crown Court.

Baruch Chalomish, 54, escaped a lengthy prison sentence and was given unconditional bail. It was indicated by the judge that he would face an order to attend narcotic rehabilitation organised by the strictly Orthodox Jewish community when he reappears for sentencing on December 17.

Jury out on 'cocaine and sex' rabbi

The jury remains out at Manchester Crown Court after nearly five hours of deliberating whether Rabbi Baruch Chalomish and his co-defendent, Nasir Abbas, were indeed running commercial cocaine parties.

Summing up the case, Judge Michael Henshell directed the jury of five men and seven women to return only a unanimous verdict on each defendant's guilt over each count of possession of a controlled drug and possession with intent to supply cocaine.

Cocaine rabbi 'stereotyped as drug dealer'

The rabbi accused of financing a professional cocaine supply business, which involved prostitutes and run by a Muslim partner, is the "victim of a racial stereotype of rich Jew financing a poor Muslim".

That was the claim made by Rabbi Baruch Chalomish's defence barrister, Jonathan Goldberg QC, in his final speech to the jury in Manchester Crown Court today.

Kosher abattoir owner faces 1,255 years for fraud

The former CEO of America’s largest kosher slaughterhouse has been convicted on 86 charges of fraud.

A South Dakota jury declared Sholom Rubashkin, formerly of the Agriprocessors kosher meatpacking plant in Iowa, guilty of bank, mail and wire fraud; making false statements to a bank; money laundering; and ignoring an order to pay livestock providers. He was acquitted on five counts.

A date for sentencing has yet to be announced but Rubashkin, 50, could face up to 1,255 years in jail.
He still faces trial on 72 charges relating to immigration violations.

Rabbi took kosher food to five-day coke binge

Admitting to snorting large quantities of cocaine and having sex with prostitutes, a rabbi accused of running a cocaine supply business told a court that he had taken kosher food with him to eat during a five-day drug binge at the Manchester city centre apartment where he was arrested.

Rabbi Baruch Chalomish has pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing cocaine, but denies two counts of possession of cocaine with intent to supply. He stands co-accused with a convicted drug dealer, Nasir Abbas, who has failed to attend the trial and is being tried in his absence.

Rabbi ‘offered girls cocaine for sex’

A rabbi caught with more than £15,000 in cash and 100g of cocaine was dealing to girls in exchange for “sexual services” a court heard.

Baruch Chalomish, 54, and his friend Nasir Abbas, were caught in possession of cocaine with a purity of up to 80 per cent by police who searched a serviced apartment in January this year.

Police later searched the rabbi’s home on Upper Park Road, in Salford, and discovered a further 50g of cocaine scattered around the house in different containers.
