Latin teacher innocent of sex abuse

A Latin teacher at an exclusive London prep school has been cleared of sexually abusing children.

Michael Gordon, 55, a member of Pinner and Northwood Liberal Synagogue, was found not guilty of 14 counts of sexual assault on a child under 13 and four of sexual assault between September 1 2006 and April 9 2009.

Southwark Crown Court heard last week that Mr Gordon, a teacher with 25 years’ experience, allegedly stroked the youngsters regularly and pressed himself up against them.

Web racists have jail sentence cuts

Two men who were jailed for inciting racial hatred on a foreign website have had their sentences cut.

Simon Sheppard, 52, of Selby, North Yorkshire was sentenced to four years and 10 months, and Stephen Whittle, 43, Preston, Lancashire to two years and four months at Leeds Crown Court in July.

They appealed against the conviction and lost.

Today, the three appeal judges reduced Sheppard's sentence by one year and Whittle's by six months.

Israel will not extradite alleged sex offender to US

A strictly Orthodox man suspected of molesting children has escaped extradition from Israel to the US.

Abraham Mondrowitz fled to Jerusalem in 1985 after being charged with sodomising four boys in Brooklyn. According to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office, Mondrowitz gained the trust of parents by passing himself off as a school psychologist using a phony degree. An attempt by the Brooklyn DA’s office to return Mondrowitz to America in 1985 failed because the alleged crime was not covered by an extradition agreement with Israel.

How we hacked the JC hacker

Special branch are investigating an attempt by pro-Palestinian hackers to compromise the JC website.

Police were passed vital clues about the identity of the hacker after an investigation by the company’s IT experts revealed the source of the attack.

The site was suspended briefly on Sunday evening after the home page displayed a Palestinian flag and an antisemitic message in broken English and Turkish, which stated the hack to be the work of “Palestinian Mujaheeds”.

Row over conversion organisation EJF 'sex scandal'

An extraordinary war of words has broken out over the scandal-racked conversion organisation Eternal Jewish Family, whose founder quit last month over sex allegations.

Rabbi Aba Dunner, the London-based executive director of the Conference of European Rabbis, rounded on the EJF this week, telling the VosIzNeias news site that he would continue to try to stop the organisation’s “nefarious activities”.

But EJF hit back, accusing Rabbi Dunner of not refunding money that it had given to the CER.

Israeli 'polygamous guru' held for rape allegations

Israeli self-styled ‘guru’ Goel Ratzon has had his appeal for bail rejected after he was arrested on suspicion of enslaving and raping several of his 17 ‘wives’.

The Tel Aviv District Court on Friday rejected an appeal filed by Mr Ratzon against the extension of his 12-day remand.

He will be held in a Tel Aviv jail until his court date. No formal charges have been made but he is held on suspicion of enslavement, rape and extortion.

Child killings fuel Israel 'crime-wave' fears

After a murder reminiscent of the James Bulger case and several other apparently violent deaths since the New Year, Israelis are becoming increasingly concerned about violent crime.

On January 1, police found the body of seven-year-old Leon Kalantarov in the bedroom of Naor and Adir Sudmi, twins in their 20s who live in the boy’s home town, near Ashdod.

Man guilty of kosher bakery break-in

A man has pleaded guilty to stealing a laptop and causing several hundred pounds worth of damage to a kosher bakery in Stamford Hill.

Mehmet Kama, 29, of Bridlington Road, Enfield pleaded guilty at Thames Magistrates Court to burglary, following a break-in at Grodzinski kosher bakery.

DCI Gary Bruce of Hackney Police said: "This individual was quickly identified and apprehended following extensive police enquiries, with help from the Jewish community.

Man fined for New Year antisemitic abuse

A 20-year-old Romanian has been fined after he shouted antisemitic abuse at two revellers and spat at police officers in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Two Jewish men alerted police after they were shouted at outside The Refectory pub in Finchley Road, Golders Green, at 3.15 am on January 1.

When officers arrived they found a group of men involved in a scuffle. Two ran away but the third, Daniel Cader, was arrested. While being detained he spat at the police and paramedics.

Cocaine rabbi escapes jail sentence

The rabbi convicted of cocaine possession has received an order to attend narcotics rehabilitation within the Jewish community, escaping a jail term.

At his trial in November, Rabbi Chalomish had pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of high-quality cocaine after falling into heavy addiction. The jury found him guilty of possessing 100g of cocaine, but unanimously cleared him on two counts of the more severe charge of intent to supply the drug.
