Taking on the drug gangs of Moss Side

BOYS are playing pool, girls are chatting, something’s cooking in the kitchen and there is a lot of noise. It could be any youth club, anywhere in the country. But it is in the heart Manchester’s Moss Side district, the capital of Britain’s guns and gang culture, where, at least according to press reports, children barely out of primary school deliver wraps of heroin on mountain bikes.

Handcuffed Jewish boy calls for help by text

A teenage boy whose family were being robbed at gunpoint alerted neighbours by texting them while his hands were handcuffed behind his back.

The 16-year-old managed to slip his mobile phone from his pocket and type the words: "Call police to my house - we are being robbed."

He even managed to dial the neighbour's number so his mother could lie next to him and whisper into the mouthpiece.

Four men had burst in to the house in Hendon, north west London, on a Saturday night in April, armed with two guns and a screwdriver.

Israeli man's body found by picnickers

The mutilated body of a 25-year-old Israeli man has been found in Kiev by picnickers.

Arie Amigud Leibovich (also known as Stanislav Mizernov) disappeared three weeks ago after hosting a party with his flatmate.

Police have arrested a computer technician who has confessed to the murder and even reconstructed it for them.

Teenage girl suspected of synagogue arson

A teenage girl has been arrested for a suspected arson attack on a Jerusalem synagogue, which she claims was revenge for harassment by her Charedi neighbours.

The girl, who has not been named, is suspected of setting fire near the Ark at the Heichal Shlomo synagogue on Pnim Meirot Street, during Lag B’Omer.

She will be held in custody for police questioning until this evening.

Police said that the girl is believed to have carried a lighter into the synagogue and set fire to the cantor’s platform and the screen in front of the Ark.

Elderly Jewish sisters robbed

Two elderly Jewish sisters were left in shock after thieves ransacked their north Manchester home before leaving empty-handed.

One of the women, aged 87, was yanked from the phone as she tried to call the police. She was held with her mouth covered to silence her cries.

The three raiders searched the house on Bury New Road, Broughton Park, but left shortly after 2.30am last Wednesday. The sisters then alerted a neighbour. Both were treated for shock and the 87-year-old suffered bruising to her arms. Police are appealing for information.

Woman,64, fights off burglars who stole £30k

A 64-year-old woman has revealed how she managed to fight off two burglars who were in cahoots with her cleaner.

She put up such stout resistance that although the gang escaped with more than £30,000-worth of jewellery, they did not take valuable items that she was wearing.

Barnet police have warned other householders to beware of the gang, thought to be Romanians and believed to have carried out other burglaries in the area.

Antisemitic crime drops in Barnet

Barnet, home to Britain's biggest Jewish population, has reported a significant drop in racist and religious hate crime and an increase in catching the perpetrators.

There were 284 racist offences during the 2009/10 year, which ended in March, compared to 428 in the previous 12 months.

Up from 35 per cent to 50 per cent was the rate of clear-up - where police identify the culprits and a punishment is applied ranging from a caution to a prison sentence.

Jeremiah Duggan's mother praises documentary

The mother of Jewish student, Jeremiah Duggan, who died under suspicious circumstances seven years ago, has praised a Channel 4 documentary about his death but added it could have been “braver”.

Mr Duggan was found dead aged 22 on a highway near Wiesbaden, Germany in March 2003 while attending a youth event organised by the far-right LaRouche group.

A Cutting Edge documentary on Thursday, called Lost Abroad: The Parents’ story , follows Mrs Duggan through Germany and France as she retraces her son’s final steps.

Paedophile who hid in Stamford Hill jailed

A paedophile who fled to London to escape justice in Israel has been jailed for 13 years for raping a teenage boy.

Nachman Stal lived secretly among the Charedi community in Stamford Hill, north London.

He had left Israel in 2006 after being found guilty of sodomy and indecent assault of a minor.

The father-of-nine was only recaptured by chance in May 2008 when police stopped to help him change a punctured tyre in west London.

Killer of Jewish shopkeeper 'could still be at large'

The contract killer of Beatrice "Biddy" Gold, the London woman shot dead in the basement of her clothing business 35 years ago, might still be at large, it emerged this week.

The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) confirmed that the case of John Errol Heibner, convicted in 1976 of Mrs Gold's murder, will be referred back to the Court of Appeal.
