Seven years prison after violent assault

A Jewish man has been sent to prison for seven years after luring a teenager to a restaurant in Golders Green and repeatedly stabbing him following a feud over a girl.

Jacob Butchoff, 20, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent and was handed the sentence in Wood Green Crown Court today.

He was arrested in September last year after he attacked an 18-year-old man at a Chinese restaurant in Golders Green Road.

The victim had begun a relationship with Butchoff’s ex-girlfriend in 2007 which prompted animosity between the two.

'Nigeria 'bribe' lawyer loses extradition-appeal

A British solicitor has failed in a High Court bid to block his extradition to the United States where he faces charges of aiding and abetting an enormous corruption plot.

Jeffrey Tesler, 62, is accused by the American authorities of involvement in an international conspiracy to channel bribes to senior officials in Nigeria.

Mr Tesler, who works for a legal practice in Tottenham, north London, argued that the alleged conduct complained of did not occur in America, and there were “insufficiently substantial links” between it and the US to legally justify extradition.

Israeli police arrest scroll gang rabbi

Police hope to have put a brake on the rising number of Torah scroll thefts from synagogues around Israel after arresting two gangs last week.

In the largest of the swoops, police uncovered an unusual example of Arab-Jewish co-operation when they charged three Arabs in Lod and a prominent rabbi from the strictly-Orthodox town of Elad, near Petach Tikvah, with the theft of 70 Torah scrolls.

Jewish security team nab Craigslist car thief

Members of an Orthodox Jewish security force in New York helped catch an alleged car thief by setting up a sting operation.

Valsyl Lazoryshyn is believed to have stolen a car after its owner advertised the vehicle for sale on the website Craigslist.

After being fooled by Mr Lazoryshyn, who drove the car away during a test drive, the owner decided to contact the Shomrim.

The Brooklyn branch of the Jewish security group helped by arranging a second car sale at which he could pose as a prospective buyer.

Police crack down on lead theft

The unsolved theft of thousands of pounds worth of roofing from a Liverpool synagogue has prompted a police crackdown. Large amounts of lead were ripped from the Grade-I listed Princes Road Synagogue in August. The theft was just months after extensive repairs to the synagogue roof following a £71,000 English Heritage grant.

Police Inspector Deborah Mackay said investigations were continuing after failing to charge a 39-year-old man arrested last month for the theft.

Man jailed for Auschwitz sign theft

A Swedish man has been jailed for more than two years for plotting the theft of the "Arbeit macht frei" sign at Auschwitz.

Former neo-Nazi leader Anders Hoegstroem, 34, admitted his role in the theft and agreed a plea bargain with the Krakow court last month.

He will be moved to Sweden to serve his sentence of two years and eight months.

The infamous sign was recovered last December, three days after it was stolen. It had been broken into three separate pieces.

The judge also jailed two Polish men, each for up to two-and-a-half years, for their roles in the crime.

MP Luciana Berger's gifts from suspected stalker

Britain’s youngest Jewish MP has complained to the Commons authorities about a suspected serial stalker.

Luciana Berger, 29, received a pair of diamond earrings and inappropriate cards from the man, who has also pestered other female politicians.

Ms Berger, a former director of Labour Friends of Israel, was elected as the party’s MP for Liverpool Wavertree in May.

The man, thought to be American, is also believed to have sent a bracelet to a second female MP, as well as sending other cards with “odd messages”.

Bankrupt psychologist suffered from 'persecution mania'

A respected Jewish psychologist fighting his two-and-a-half year sentence for serious financial crimes suffers from a "persecution mania", the Court of Appeal heard on Friday.

Yehuda Crammer, 65, who was made bankrupt several years ago, is serving his jail sentence after admitting two counts of concealing property, imposed at Manchester Crown Court in June.

Crammer, of Danesway, Prestwich, Manchester, has already failed in one attempt to win a reduction in the sentence, but his lawyers were at the Court of Appeal in London on Friday to begin a second attempt.

Shul CCTV catches purse snatcher

An Edgware synagogue has been thanked by police for its role in the jailing of a heroin addict who assaulted a pensioner outside the shul. The Yeshurun Synagogue in Fernhurst Gardens assisted officers' inquiries after the incident last month.

Christian Molnar, 30, of Burnt Oak Broadway, was jailed for 24 weeks at Hendon Magistrates' Court after admitting snatching a purse from an 84-year-old non-Jewish woman to fund his addiction.

The shul handed police a CCTV recording of the mugging which showed Molnar making off with the purse.

Hollywood legend gunned down in car

A legendary Jewish Hollywood publicist was shot and killed in Beverly Hills on her way home from the premiere of the new Christina Aguilera film.

Ronni Chasen, 64, who represented stars including Natalie Wood and Morgan Freeman, was found dead in her car after being shot several times in the chest.

She was driving down Sunset Boulevard at the time, and police found the car crashed into a lamppost.

Hours earlier she had been mingling with celebrities at the opening night of the Cher film Burlesque.

Born in New York, she founded the Chasen & Company publicity firm.
