Lawyer: Murder confession 'false' in Leiby Kletzky case

The lawyer for a man accused of the shocking and brutal murder of an eight-year-old boy from a Chasidic Jewish community in New York has claimed his client was pushed into confessing to the crime.

Levi Aron, who admitted to killing Leiby Kletzky in July after the boy's dismembered body parts were found in a suitcase and at Aron's home, appeared at a court hearing in Brooklyn on Monday.

Shtreimels – large fur hats lined with velvet – have been worn by married Charedi men for centuries and can be worth up to £4,000.


Settlers go on revenge rampage

West Bank settlers have set fire to a mosque in the Palestinian village of Qusra, south of Nablus, and vandalised an IDF base.

The attacks are thought to be in retaliation for the Israeli government's destruction of three houses on Sunday in the illegal Jewish settlement of Migron. Settlers were seen placing burning tyres inside the mosque before dawn on Monday, badly burning its interior.


Israeli escapes German torture chamber

An Israeli woman managed to free herself from the clutches of a German captor after he trapped her in a room rigged with explosives.

The woman, who is 26, has not been named but reportedly was acquainted with her captor. Despite being handcuffed in the tiny room – an adapted telephone box - she escaped after a few hours when her captor Thomas Fischer failed to lock the door.

Squatters charged after Judaica found in Golders Green house

Eight men have been charged with four counts of burglary in connection with the thefts of Judaica items and other valuables from properties in Golders Green.

Barnet police discovered the men squatting in a house on the Ridgeway in Golders Green last week and arrested them.

The stash police found at the house included a grandfather clock, jewellery, cameras and laptop computers.


Driver who killed Northwood couple jailed for seven years

A drunk-driver has been sentenced to seven years in jail for killing a married couple from Northwood after he lost control of the car and swerved on to the pavement.

Alan Bernard, 53, and wife Rochelle, 51, died last September when a car crashed into them as they were walking down a road in Dorset. A friend of theirs was seriously injured in the accident.
