Burn victim hands rabbi $18m lawsuit

An arson attack that left a man with severe burns has brought unwelcome scrutiny to a New York enclave of a strict Chasidic sect.

New Square - about 40 miles from New York City in Rockland County - is populated by Skver Chasidim, a group that originated in the Ukranian town of Skvyra. David Twersky has been its Grand Rabbi since his father died in 1968.

'Confession made up' in Stamford Hill pensioner murder case

Police "fabricated" evidence in a desperate attempt to seal a conviction for the unsolved manslaughter of a Stamford Hill pensioner, a court has heard.

Eveline Kelmenson, 83, died alone after burglars raided her home and left her bound and gagged.

She lay undiscovered for five weeks before she was found by relatives on New Year's Day 2009.

Raid victim 'bound and left to die'

A pensioner died alone in her bedroom after burglars ransacked her home and left her bound, gagged and unable to call for help.

Eveline Kelmenson, 83, lay undiscovered for five weeks before relatives found her body on New Year's Day 2009.

Pensioner gagged and left to die 'slow death'

A Stamford Hill pensioner was left gagged and bound to a chair by burglars for five weeks before her body was discovered, a court heard this week.

Two Polish men broke into 83-year-old Eveline Kelmenson's house through the basement in the middle of the night, before taping her to a chair, robbing her and ransacking her home, a jury at the Old Bailey was told.

Pig's head left at Scots doorway

Police have said that the leaving of a pig's head outside the home of a Jewish woman in Aberdeen is not a racial incident.

Auschwitz visitor arrested for stealing souvenir

Police have detained a French tourist who stole a piece of the wire fence at the Auschwitz concentration camp - because he wanted a souvenir.

According to a Polish news site, the man was arrested as he attempted to board a plane in Krakow.

After the wire was spotted when his luggage was scanned, he admitted to the border guards that he had taken it.

JFS pupils attacked on bus

Barnet police are stepping up patrols in the Hendon area after JFS pupils were assaulted by four boys who burst onto their school bus.

Police said the four attacked a JFS boy while the bus was stationary in traffic on Station Road, Hendon, after school last Wednesday. The teenagers, aged between 15 and 17, are said to have pressed the emergency access button to climb aboard the vehicle.

Delay for miscarriage of justice appeal

A man who was jailed 35 years ago for the gruesome murder of a Jewish clothing shop owner is unlikely to have his appeal heard until next year.

Rabbi who groped Israeli soldier sentenced to jail
