Elections 2014: Labour the big winners in London and the north

When my old friend Sunder Katwala was head of the centre-left Fabian Society he had one of his many bright ideas.

Tired of the sniping and bitterness that had poisoned the debate over the Middle East in Britain, he suggested that no senior Labour politician should appear at a meeting held by Labour Friends of Israel unless it was jointly held with Labour Friends of Palestine.

JC columnist Daniel Finkelstein to join Lords as new Peers revealed

Times associate editor and JC columnist Daniel Finkelstein has been made a Conservative peer.

He was included on a list of working peerages announced by Downing Street today.

Mr Finkelstein, who is also a JC board member, was previously head of policy at the Conservative Party.

New Parliamentary chairman for Conservative Friends of Israel

Conservative Friends of Israel’s Parliamentary chairman, James Arbuthnot, is to retire from the role.

He will be replaced by Hertsmere MP James Clappison.

Mr Clappison is currently a vice-chairman of the group, but will take on the top position temporarily while CFI considers a permanent appointment.

Thatcher thought Tories were 'sacrificing Jews' in Finchley

Margaret Thatcher believed that the Conservative Party was "sacrificing [Jewish supporters] unnecessarily" when she fought her first election in Finchley, according to a new biography of the late prime minister.

In Charles Moore's authorised biography, he notes that when she won the seat for the first time in 1959, "there was some antisemitic feeling" in the local Conservative association.

Minister warns against Muslim antisemitism in the UK

A government minister has spoken out against “antisemitism in the Muslim community” in Britain.

Baroness Warsi, the Minister for Faith and Communities, said that anti-Zionism was often a mask for anti-Jewish hatred.
