The next Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, at last knows the identity of his Jewish paternal relations, hitherto shrouded in mystery.

It has emerged that his grandfather Bernard was one of four brothers named Weiler, who came to London from Germany in the 1880s and became prosperous ostrich feather merchants.

New archbishop is ‘a good friend' to Jews

The Council of Christian and Jews has welcomed the new Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, who will succeed Rowan Williams next year, as a “good friend”.

The Rt Rev Welby, Bishop of Durham and a former dean of Liverpool Cathedral, who will automatically become a joint president of the CCJ, has been involved in reconciliation work between Jews and Arabs.

Bishops pull out of Holy Land meeting

Two bishops have pulled out of a conference on the Holy Land to be held in Gateshead next month, after warnings that it would be biased against Israel.

The Anglican Bishop of Newcastle, Martin Wharton, and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle, Seamus Cunningham, withdrew after pleas from the Newcastle Jewish community, the Board of Deputies and the Council of Christians and Jews.

Christian tourism to Israel booming

Christian tourism to Israel is booming, according to new figures released by the country's tourism ministry.

In a poll conducted earlier this month, it emerged that 58 per cent of all visitors to the Jewish state were Christians travelling to see sites including the sea of Galilee and Bethlehem.
