Unfriendly Chelsea may soon lose Abramovich

The oligarch is deeply hurt that the fans at Stamford Bridge have not warmed to him

Avram Grant has taken the UK by storm. It would be hard to think of another high-profile character in British history who has generated so much pride within the Jewish community while stirring up so much prejudice outside of it. Israelis explain the latter part of the equation in one word or two, depending on how you spell antisemitism, but the reality is more complex.

Bridge abuse not a place for kids

By Danny Caro, May 9, 2008

It was a throwback to the 1980s when I watched the second leg of the Champions League semi-final between Chelsea and Liverpool at Stamford Bridge last week. Sitting in the press overflow in the East Lower Stand, I was taken aback by the foul-mouthed language coming from the terraces.

Our man Avram deserves respect

By Danny Caro, April 25, 2008

I think it’s about time that someone stood up for Chelsea boss Avram Grant and as there doesn’t appear to be a lengthy queue, I will do it for him. I am not suggesting setting up an Appreciation Society, especially being a Liverpool fan in the midst of a Champions League semi-final against the Stamford Bridge club, but I believe it’s time for the British press to show him some respect. When he took over from Jose Mourinho last September, I remember the looks of amazement from some of the country’s top sport writers.

Grant is game for holy day

By Simon Griver, April 18, 2008

Avram Grant’s father has defended his son over the clash between Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final second leg coinciding with Holocaust Day.

The Israeli manager looks set to come in for fierce criticism back home as he is expected to be in the dugout for the Stamford Bridge’s club most important match of the season on April 30.

The game will not be televised live in Israel as the date is considered inappropriate to engage in leisure and entertainment activities.

Smiling Avram tells Israel of fierce UK press

By Simon Griver, March 28, 2008

Just hours after beating one of ‘the big three’ for the first time, Chelsea manager Avram Grant took part in the second session of his Uefa PRO License course. But while he was required to dash for a night flight shortly after the final whistle at Stamford Bridge , he looked rested and was smiling as he arrived at Israel FA headquarters on Monday morning and spoke about his team’s 2-1 victory over Arsenal.

The United Synagogue could be about to benefit from a massive cash injection, courtesy of an unexpected benefactor: billionaire Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich.

Grant's job not in question

By Simon Griver, March 21, 2008

As Chelsea prepare to face Arsenal on Sunday in a match that will have a vital bearing on who will win this season’s title, the JC can reveal that manager Avram Grant will still be charge at the start of the 2008/09 season, regardless of whether he wins silverware this campaign.
