Charity Commission quizzes War on Want over anti-Israel campaigns

The Charity Commission has said it is not formally investigating War on Want after a complaint about the charity’s anti-Israel campaigns.

But the JC understands that the anti-poverty group has been asked to provide information to the commission about its campaigns in Gaza and the Palestinian territories.

Fed VIP is royally impressed

Unsung heroes enjoy their evening in the spotlight

Some of British Jewry's most dedicated volunteers were recognised at a national awards ceremony on Monday night.

In front of the 260 guests at the Wohl Jewish Volunteering Network awards at Finchley Synagogue, the JC People's Choice award was presented to Kisharon volunteer Peter Lewinson.

Working well - Kisharon's scheme to find jobs for the learning disabled

National statistics show that 65 per cent of people with a learning disability want to work - yet only one-in-ten of these are in jobs.

But learning disability charity Kisharon insists it finds paid work for everyone on its employment programme.

Chief executive Dr Beverley Jacobson explains that the positions are mostly "only for a couple of hours a week.

Jewish charity probed over £2 million loan

The Charity Commission has launched an inquiry into a north London charity which supports Torah study and other Orthodox causes over a £2 million loan.

The Golders Green-based Reb Moishe Foundation lent the money to a company of which the charity’s sole listed trustee, Jacob Plitnick, is also a director.

Stepping up fight against poverty

Jewish organisations may need to do more to prevent community members falling into poverty, according to the head of the Institute for Jewish Policy Research (JPR).

Although Dr Jonathan Boyd acknowledged that much was being done to help those in financial difficulty, little attention was paid to preventing poverty in the first place.

Jewish Care volunteer honoured by David Cameron

An 83-year-old grandmother has received the Prime Minister’s Point of Light award for her voluntary work.

Barbara Waterman, from Hendon, north-west London, received the award, which recognises outstanding volunteers, for her work at Stepney Jewish Community Centre in east London – which has a declining Jewish community.

Brunch boost for Emunah

“Buy less… experience more,” was the message from trend guru and author James Wallman who spoke at a British Emunah brunch organised by volunteer Michelle Plainer.

Each of the 40 guests received a copy of Mr Wallman’s book, ‘Stuffocation – Living More with Less’ at the brunch which took place at the Central Square Minyan in Hampstead Garden Suburb.

Glasgow teens raise £2,500 for Chai

A group of teenage girls attracted 200 people to an event in support of Chai Cancer Care, raising more than £2,500 for the charity.

The Chai 13 committee: Ava Black, Leila Black, Olivia Bishop, Katie Lewis, Hannah Rose and Maya Tenby, held a coffee morning in the Walton Community Centre.
