BBC’s Washington reporter rapped over ‘lobby’ remark

A BBC correspondent has been criticised by the Board of Deputies for using the term “Jewish lobby” in discussing the American election.

Washington correspondent Katty Kay, in a recent Twitter question and answer session, had been asked why both American President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney were “so defensive” when questioned about their commitment to Israel.

Wineman wins election to chair European Jewish group

Vivian Wineman, the president of the Board of Deputies, has been elected to chair the European Jewish Congress’ council.

Mr Wineman won an election at an EJC meeting in Brussels, Belgium, on Wednesday.

The EJC is the federation of democratically-elected leaders of Jewish communities across 40 European countries, representing around 2.5 million European Jews.

Milah UK to protect Jewish circumcision in Britain

A new group, Milah UK, has been launched to promote the practice of Jewish circumcision in the UK.

The new group will serve all members of the community, from strictly Orthodox to Liberal Judaism.

Milah UK is jointly chaired by Dr Simon Hochhauser, former president of the United Synagogue and Prof David Katz, from the defence division at the Board of Deputies of British Jews.

Oxfam and Board of Deputies in new tie-in

A campaign to encourage the community’s “food heroes” to tackle global poverty and world food shortages has been launched by the Board of Deputies and Oxfam.

The Grow Tatzmiach six-month leadership programme (tatzmiach is the Hebrew for “grow”) will help Jewish campaigners tackle injustices in the international food system.

‘Antisemite’ vicar in Board of Deputies complaint

The Board of Deputies has made an unprecedented formal complaint to the Church of England over the conduct of a controversial Anglican vicar.

Reverend Stephen Sizer is accused by the Board of “conduct unbecoming or inappropriate to the office and work of a clerk in Holy Orders”.

Board of Deputies welcomes Methodist interfaith group

The president of the Board of Deputies, Vivian Wineman, has welcomed the creation of a new Jewish-Christian interfaith organisation. He said that the Methodist Friends of Judaism (MFJ) “represents a vital step in the process of bridge-building. It is asking brave questions, at a time when many have decided to remain silent.”

Board of Deputies assists religious workers in Yom Tov disputes

The Board of Deputies has received an unusually high number of requests for help this year from Jews having trouble taking time off for festivals.

To date 12 people have approached the Board. One reason may be because all seven Orthodox Yomtovim, from Rosh Hashanah to Simchat Torah, fall on a weekday this year.

The JC has learned that the guests of honour at the Board of Deputies’ annual dinner in November will be King Abdullah of Jordan - following in the footsteps of his father, King Hussein, who attended the Board’s annual dinner several years ago.

Board of Deputies anger as South Africa labels Israel 'occupier' state

The Board of Deputies has requested an urgent meeting with the South African High Commissioner in London after his country’s decision to relabel Israeli settlement goods as originating in occupied territory.

A spokesman for the Board said it was “troubled” by the labelling move, which has outraged South African Jewry and Israel.
