Celebrations at the Gilad Shalit tent

News of a deal inked between israel and Hamas to secure the release of Gilad Shalit prompted wild celebrations in Jerusalem. British teenagers on the FZY and Bnei Akiva yearcourse schemes were there to join in.

Bnei Akiva in training

October 6, 2011

Israeli expert Ilan Frydman was flown over by Bnei Akiva for a training day for more than 150 madrichim from Finchley, Edgware, Borehamwood, Southgate and Birmingham.

BA's Deborah Blank said: "It's really incredible the significant improvements we have already noticed from this investment in the future leaders of Anglo-Jewry." A Shabbaton in Bushey was organised to train local leaders.

Leading questions facing movement heads

Many youth movements will be showing more of their feminine side this year.

Habonim Dror, Noam Masorti Youth and BBYO are being led by women, while two other movements have scrapped the single director system in favour of leadership teams.

The new directors include two philosophy graduates, two former Cambridge students and an ex-university level netball player.

Bnei Akiva app-roved

Bnei Akiva has become the first Jewish youth movement to launch an iPhone app, for use on all Apple products.

The free download allows users to watch BATV, Bnei Akiva's regular webcast with news and features from across its 30 UK branches, as well as other Bnei Akiva videos.

They can also read its latest educational publications and get info about BA camps, tours and year schemes.

Israel gap year could boost university application

Participants on gap year schemes in Israel could find that their time abroad helps them win a university place.

Students can boost their Ucas tariff points by 70 points – equivalent to an A grade at AS Level – by earning a Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (Cope).

It's a scream as American boy band wows London

It might not quite have been Take That, but there was only one boy band capturing the screaming attention of scores of teenage girls in Mill Hill on Sunday.

They were among the 600 fans of all ages who turned out for a concert by New York group the Maccabeats, organised by Bnei Akiva.
