Obama backs Munich silence despite IOC stance

The US President has given his backing to the calls for a minute’s silence at the London Olympics in memory of the Munich massacre 40 years ago.

White House official Tommy Vietor said on Thursday that the president “absolutely” supported the campaign for this tribute, launched by the widow of one of the 11 Israeli athletes murdered by Palestinian terrorists at the September 1972 Games.

Shimon Peres honoured with Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama

Shimon Peres has been awarded the US Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The Israeli statesman collected the prize at a ceremony in Washington DC on Wednesday evening hosted by Barack Obama.

Speaking as he honoured Mr Peres with the highest civilian award given by the US government, Mr Obama praised the Israeli for his contribution to the links between the two countries.

A new survey commissioned for the American Jewish Committee has revealed that while the Democratic politician is less popular among respondents than he was in 2008, he would still be backed by nearly two - thirds.
