‘Dress down’ or risk being robbed, police tell women

A wave of violent crime is hitting Jewish areas in London and Manchester and police in London are warning that shoppers need a heightened awareness, may need to “dress down” and should avoid wearing expensive jewellery and accessories.

In the latest attack in north-west London, two women were beaten and robbed by a gang as they returned home from a shopping trip.

Hannah Kleinfeld and a friend were mugged by two men on the driveway of Mrs Kleinfeld’s home after they got out of her Lexus car.

Support for the abused

Talks have started over the establishment of a Manchester support service for Jewish women who have suffered domestic violence.

The initiative stems from a panel discussion held by London-based Jewish Women’s Aid in Manchester last Thursday. As well as JWA vice-chair Elaine Grazin and campaigns manager Gay Waldman, the discussion featured Dawn Redshaw from Salford Women’s Aid, Judge Lindsey Kushner and Prestwich rabbi Yehoshua Landes.

Private coach for pupils as gangs attack school buses

Parents of pupils at Britain's biggest Jewish school are to pay for private buses following a series of incidents on public transport.

In one attack last week, a gang threatened to stab a JFS pupil travelling home to Golders Green, North West London.

The attack, which included the boy's friends being called "Jewish pigs" and "scum", follows the throwing of stones at bus windows and antisemitic taunts shouted at youngsters.

Car-jackers beat me up and sped off with my dog

A mother-of-three has spoken of how a gang beat and threatened to kill her before stealing her car and driving off with her pedigree dog as she left a nail salon in North-West London.

Lorretta Paterson, who runs gift shop Temptations in Temple Fortune, suffered cuts and bruises when she was severely beaten by three men, last Friday.

The incident is the latest in a series of attacks on Jewish business owners in the area.

Three teens face assault charges

Three teenagers were due to appear in court this week in connection with an attack on a Jewish man in a park.

The 22-year-old was attacked as he walked through St Mary's Park in Prestwich, Manchester, at around 8.30pm on June 25.

He suffered head injuries and required stitches to treat a 9cm cut.

The boys, who are all 15 and cannot be named because of their age, were due to appear at Bury Youth Court on Thursday 25th September.

Racist attack in Llandudno

A man was punched and had his kippah knocked off in what police describe as a racist attack.

The 24-year-old was wrestled to the ground by two men and hit in the face during the assault in Llandudno, North Wales, last week.

He had been walking close to a Chabad-run community centre on the outskirts of the town when the men attacked him. They removed his skullcap before running away.

The victim, who has not been named, was treated for shock and minor injuries.

Anti-abuse rabbi run out of town

A rabbi who uncovers child abuse in strictly Orthodox communities says he feared for his life as he was chased by a group of 200 Charedi men in North London.

Rabbi Nochum Rosenberg, 58, was forced to flee from a Stamford Hill synagogue where he had been listening to a lecture last Thursday.

He ran into Manor Road, in the heart of the community, and was taken to safety after stopping a passing police car.

Knife case to go to trial

July 24, 2008

A 37-year-old man faces trial in October on two counts of grievous bodily harm after two men were stabbed in separate incidents in Golders Green in May. Mohammed Jama Ahmed pleaded not guilty at Wood Green Crown Court on Tuesday. He was remanded in custody.

Israel ‘did not abuse reporter’

Israel has denied allegations by a Palestinian journalist that he was abused at a border crossing. Mohammed Omer, 24, said he collapsed during questioning. But Israeli officials insisted he was treated fairly and that his account was full of contradictions.

Charges in Paris attack

July 17, 2008

French police have filed preliminary charges against three suspects in connection with a serious assault on a Jewish teenager in Paris. The 17-year-old boy was in a coma for two days following the June 21 attack in an eastern neighbourhood just outside Paris.
