Israel to free hunger striker

February 23, 2012

A suspected Islamic Jihad activist ended his 66-day hunger strike on Tuesday after Israel agreed to his release from jail in two months.

Supporters of Khader Adnan, who was arrested in the West Bank in December, say he had been close to death.

His protest against his treatment and detention without charge had led to demonstrations by Palestinians and concern from human rights organisations.

Israel's Justice Ministry announced he would be freed if no substantial new evidence emerged. His case had been due to be heard by the Supreme Court which brought it forward because of the state of his health.
