Hollywood star Jon Voight has accused Time magazine of being “antisemitic” for its recent cover story on "Why Israel Doesn’t Care About Peace."

The actor, father of Angelina Jolie and star of the film Midnight Cowboy, suggested readers should boycott the magazine. He made the comments in an interview with former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, who also criticised the Time story.

Mr Voight said: “If Israel falls, we all fall. This is antisemitism. Who are the antisemites who are running Time?”

Referring to another Time issue which focused on Islamophobia, he added: “This is exactly the way we create wars between nations.

Mr Voight, who is not Jewish, has been a prominent Israel advocate for years and regularly lends his support to Lubavitch fundraising efforts.

He went on to describe recent remarks by Cuba’s Fidel Castro condemning Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for Holocaust denial as “a ray of hope.”

The Anti Defamation League (ADL) has also called on Time’s managing editor Richard Stengel to issue an apology for implying “that Israelis care more about money than a future of peace and security.”

Abraham Foxman, the ADL’s national director wrote to Mr Stengel: “The insidious subtext of Israeli Jews being obsessed with money echoes the age-old antisemitic falsehood that Jews care about money above any other interest.

“Time ignores the very real sacrifices made by Israel and its people in the pursuit of peace and the efforts by successive Israeli governments of reconciliation.

“One can only be cynical about the timing of the article, appearing as Israelis and Palestinians engage in direct negotiations and Jews the world over pray on the High Holidays for a New Year that will bring peace.”
