Students looking to build professional contacts and gain workplace experience were given a helping hand by a top businessman at a Jewish careers event in London this week.

The networking evening, organised by TrainE-TraidE, the Union of Jewish Students (UJS) and Chaplaincy, included a talk by Nick Leslau, chairman of the Prestbury Group.

Mr Leslau advised students to be creative and use their initiative so that they stood out in the competitive graduate recruitment process.

"In the current market it is essential that students are able to skillfully sell themselves in an interview."

As well as Mr Leslau's talk, the more than 200 students who attended were matched in a "speed dating" format to professionals in the fields in which they were interested. There were representatives from 40 companies, including Google, Heron International and KPMG.

"Recruitment statistics continue to identify networking as being the most powerful tool in securing employment," said TrainE-Trade's Dalia Davis. "A number of students have already been offered work placements as a direct result of the event."
