Over 100 students attended dual events run by UJS at the new Hillel Student Centre in central London and CULANU Centre in Cambridge, where they stayed up all night to celebrate the US Presidential election results on Wednesday morning. In both locations students sampled a selection of American food surrounded by red, white and blue flags, streamers and balloons.
In a straw poll taken during the night in London, students voted overwhelmingly for Obama, with 35 votes to McCain’s 10. Celebrations continued into the early hours and a large group even stayed to watch Barack Obama’s first speech as the newly appointed President Elect. Champagne and celebrations also took place at the CULANU Centre in Cambridge.
Adam Pike, UJS Chair, said “It was a fantastic opportunity for students, friends and alumni to join us in celebrating the results of the US Presidential elections, in a fantastic new space for Jewish students to use in London. UJS is committed to diversifying its events, providing new opportunities for students to engage in what interests them.”
