London diners support work of Technion in Haifa

The annual British Technion Society’s Ron Arad lecture and dinner was held at London’s Royal College of Physicians. At the event, Daniel Peltz announced the launch of a new campaign, “Touch the Future”, where donors can choose which areas of research at the Haifa-based Technion they wish to support. Lecture speaker Professor Uri Sivan told the 170 guests about his research at the Technion

Jewish Care pays tribute to activist Helen Bamber

January 22, 2009

Almost 200 women saw human rights champion Helen Bamber become Jewish Care’s Woman of Distinction 2008. The award was presented by clinical psychologist and TV presenter Dr Tanya Byron. The event, held at the Institute of Directors in Pall Mall, raised £26,000 for Jewish Care homes for those with special mental health needs.

A Manchester crowd raises £1 million for UJIA projects

January 14, 2009

UJIA Manchester welcomed more than 400 guests to the city centre Hilton Hotel to launch the charity’s campaign year. In his address, guest speaker Dr Guy Bechor, a Middle East analyst at the Herzliya Interdisciplinary Centre, spoke about the situation in Israel and the country’s vulnerable borders. Close to £1 million was raised on the night for UJIA educational programmes in both the UK and the Galil, northern Israel

Anglo-Israel association celebrates Israel’s 60th

More than 400 people attended the annual dinner of the Anglo-Israel Association at Grosvenor House. At the dinner, which celebrated the 60th anniversary of Israel, the Israeli Prime Minister’s international spokesman, Mark Regev, spoke to the guests about the current situation in Israel

London diners raise £3m for Norwood

X Factor judge Simon Cowell was the guest speaker at Norwood’s annual dinner at the Grosvenor House in Central London. Mr Cowell introduced Norwood’s fundraising film and expressed his admiration for the charity’s work. Gill Fenner, chair of the Helping Hand awards, introduced GMTV presenter Kate Garraway, who presented awards to Michelle Barnett, Rachely Plancey and Eliana Ostro. LSJS pays tribute to its outgoing chairman

January 9, 2009

St John’s Wood Synagogue was the venue for a gala dinner to honour Howard Stanton as he completes his term as chair of the Council of the London School of Jewish Studies. In his address to the 150-strong crowd, LSJS president Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks paid tribute to Mr Stanton’s achievements. LSJS chief executive Dr Raphael Zarum said of the outgoing chair: “The last five years has seen the rejuvenation of LSJS. Much of this is due to the firm leadership and strategic thinking of Howard Stanton — and we wanted to say thank you.”

A London shul hosts a party to celebrate Israel at 60

A gala dinner was held to celebrate the lives of philanthropist Sir Moses Montefiore and Haham Moses Gaster, a former Chief Rabbi of the Sephardic community in England. The event, part of “Israel at 60” celebrations, was held at Lauderdale Road Synagogue in a joint initiative with UJIA.
