followed by a discussion (Israel 2008, dir. Avraham Kushnir, 90 minutes, Hebrew, English subtitles) In the background of this drama is a story from the 2nd century. Rabbi Meir, wishing to prove to his wife, Bruriah, that “women are light-headed” (as proclaimed at the time by his fellow sages) sent one of his pupils to seduce her. Bruriah was seduced, and when she discovered that it had been planned by her husband, she committed suicide. This story infiltrates and creates turmoil in the life of a religious family, Yakov and Bruriah, living with their three children in the Jerusalem of today. Their great love is put to the test when strong-minded Bruriah, wishing to assert her independence and womanhood within the borders of the religious world, is opposed by her husband who begins to doubt her faithfulness to him. Following the film there will be a discussion led by Dr Diana Lipton, Lecturer in Hebrew Bible and Jewish Studies at King’s College London.
