The Jewish Historical Society of England presents Dr. Michael Jolles who will speak on 'British Chazanim and Synagogue Musicians'. Dr Michael Jolles has conducted research on British Jews for two decades. He has recently prepared over one thousand entries for the forthcoming Palgrave Dictionary of Anglo-Jewish History. He is the author of The Northampton Jewish Cemetery (1994), A Short History of the Jews of Northampton 1159-1996 (1996), Samuel Isaac, Saul Isaac and Nathaniel Isaacs (1998), Directory of Distinguished British Jews (2002), and Jews and the Carlton Club (2002). He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and has single-handedly conducted the first comprehensive national study of British Jewish Cantors, Chazanim and Synagogue Musicians, a research subject hitherto very much overlooked. The lecture begins at 8pm in the Moritz Gertler Hall, St. John's Wood Synagogue. Refreshments follow.
