Volunteer of the week: Pat Allen

Jewish Care

February 26, 2009

The volunteer at Jewish Care’s “Connect@Centre” at the Sobell Day Centre in Hampstead previously worked in her family’s retail fashion business

Why Jewish Care?
I retired in 1990 and having worked most of my adult life, I found it difficult to be a lady of leisure. I chose Sobell because I had heard from friends who were there of the good work being done; it seemed the right thing to do.

What does your volunteering involve?
As a volunteer co-ordinator, my day is filled with looking after the needs of our volunteers, liaising with management when required and making sure that the dress shop, which is my baby, is running smoothly. Also I need to be sure that I am using the volunteers’ talents for the benefit of the members.

What do you most enjoy about being a volunteer?
I look forward to being with the members and sharing the pleasure they derive from talking to me about their families and life.

What is your most memorable volunteering moment?
In the dress shop an old lady in a wheelchair said that she was so happy to be able to look at the clothes and just chat to me. That for me was satisfaction.
